Yes, it should be mandatory for a driver to use hand-free devices.
There are enough things going on in the road that we do not need to be trying to keep a device held while driving. There are more and more accidents reported each day of people trying to talk on phone while driving. It is just a law nature that humans, no matter how good we think we are, we just cannot do two and three things at once. As my grandmother use to say, We cannot walk down a street and chew bubble gum at the same time, so what make people think that they are capable of holding a phone and a steering wheel at one time.
Here you are in a 2-ton vehicle, running ever bit of 60mph, neck in a crook trying to hold the phone to your ear and driving with one hand all the time. By doing this, you are not able to keep a watch on your mirror to see what is going on behind you, not to mention that you cannot adjust your neck to see what is going on front and side of you. What this means is that your vehicle have enough blind sides without you making more, which you are doing while your neck is in this talking crook.
With this added blind side, you did not see that 6-ton vehicle, running 70mph, come up on your left side. You in the mean time are trying to hold the phone and move over to the left lane, which by the way you did not turn your blinkers on for because you are holding the phone, with this added blind spot, you now have just side swiped the 70mph vehicles. The out come of this act will depend on the good Lord or as some would say, The busy Devil.
With more and more vehicles and traffic on our roads and highways, we need to be more alert to what is going on around us. We need to watch for people, animals and other vehicles. The best thing to do is to pull over to the side or wait until you are at a rest stop. If there is a reason, which you just must talk on a phone while driving then you should use the speakerphone, or invest into a Bluetooth. You would think that the investment of $20- $70 would be worth it, compared to $20,000.00-$70,000.00 in damages or the lost of some ones life.
With all said, yes I believe that hand free devices should be mandatory and come with a huge fine if not obeyed. I think that it is sad that we do not think more of our lives or much of ours. I think it should be mandatory because some insurance companies do not pay damages if there is proven that the person was on a phone at the time. I think is should be mandatory because and if the insurance company will pay, how can they pay enough to return a person to life.
I think hand free devices should be mandatory because we cannot walk down a street and chew bubble gum at the same time and God know we cannot drive and talk on a phone.
