Midtown Sacramento has lots of interesting galleries. Some are traditional and others push the envelope more. All of them are fun to visit when you have a few hours to kill. The Here are some of the best ones in Midtown.
If you like variety, the Sac Art Complex is a nice place to start. It has several dozen different artists inside, and you can watch them as they work , and you can buy prints of their work, or if you have the money, the originals. All the artists there are local artists, and on Second Saturdays, you can come and talk to them. Sometimes they also serve free hors derves. The environment here is very nice, and would be apropriate to take kids to see all the cool art. They have everything here, painting, collage, statues, pottery, and more! Sometimes they have interesting shows and performances outside in the parking area. The last time I was there, there was a very cool show with metal sculptures, pyrokinectics, and a lady who juggled flaming objects.
Another great gallery is the Soolomon Dubnick Gallery. It is pretty old compared to the other galleries in Sacramento, and the art hanging ont he walls is truly enjoyable. Another place with nice art that would look good hanging over a fire place is the Smith Gallery. They have a lot of art showing famous Sacramento landscapes like the Crest theatre and the State Capital, and it is very popular.
For art that is a little more new and controversial, check out the galleries along the main part of Second Saturday, around J street. Examples of this are the Exploding Head Gallery, Axis Gallery, Fool's Foundation, and Verve. On Second Saturdays they often have musical acts, so you can enjoy the live music while looking at the interesting art. They even have free food, so it's a feast for the ears, eyes, and stomach! One more cool place downtown is the Brickhouse Art, it has a really warm and cool vibe, and people are exceptionally nice.
In my opinion, the very best time to go is at the Second Saturday evenings, because there are more people and the vibe is lively and fun. There is no better way to spend a lazy evening looking at art, having good food, listening to music, and more with friends and family, enjoying the Sacramento scene. The amazing different kinds of art is only one of the many things that make Sacramento a great destination for everyone.
