There are several pressing political issues that appeal to young Americans as evidenced by the most recent presidential election. Over 20 million voters turned out to vote for or against the new president. Many students supported the Obama campaign as they punched their ballots for change. Barrack Obama is young and seems more in touch with the average American and young Americans in particular relate to him more than many previous candidates. Innovative ideas such as the 'Town Halls' that Obama has implemented even before he won the election made him even more appealing as through these systems on the internet the average voter was able to interact with the politician and make their voice heard. Additionally, Obama's campaign funds came not from lobbyists representing corrupt corporate interests but from many individual Americans who supported him. Such policies caused the young voters to relate to Obama even more, further inspiring young Americans to vote.
Issues relating to higher education such as federal student aid in particular are important issues for young Americans. Though in most cases the government has no control over tuition, the fees charged for admission to a college or university, the government does control funding for federal student aid programs and a few other scholarships, all of which are very important. The vast majority of young Americans must rely on scholarships and federal student aid in order to get into school as many young Americans cannot afford to pay tuition. Less funding and stricter guidelines for applicants means that far less young Americans will be able to get their degrees. Survival in the modern world is almost completely dependent on those degrees.
Environmental and civil rights issues are important for young Americans too. Issues such as gay marriage, abortion, the death penalty, and global warming appeal to many young Americans who are interested in securing a better future for themselves and their friends. With our culture being more diverse than ever before, many young Americans have befriended those whom the older genderations may have scorned in many cases. As homosexuality has become increasingly more open, the new generation has become tolerant and accepting of such differing cultures. Civil rights also includes the protests against the genocide in Darfur, which is a very popular political cause represented by numerous college students all over America. You have only to exmaine college campuses all over America
