Cat breed facts: Ocicat

The Ocicat is so called because of its resemblance to the ocelot. It is actually a mixture of Abyssinian, Siamese and Silver Tabby cats, giving it a beautiful temperament, stunning, wild appearance and high intelligence. And who says you can't teach a cat a dogs tricks?

Ocicats often strike people because of their incredible abilities where intelligence is concerned and you can teach this wonderful cat almost anything you can teach a dog. They are very inquisitive and, like the Abyssinian, extremely outgoing and enjoy exploring anything new or of interest to them. Some owners of this breed describe their personalities as dogs in cat bodies, as they can be trained to do dog tricks such as fetch, walk on leads, sit, lie down, roll over and other tricks associated with dogs. They are more playful and appreciate toys more than other breeds of cats and some have been known to enjoy swimming! Ocicats are also very confident and will often go up to strangers, give them a sniff and allow themselves to be petted. The body of the Ocicat is sleek, muscular and powerful, they have extraordinary balance and have been known to lay around their owners shoulders and necks while the owner does their daily tasks.

The cat usually has a distinctive, silver colour with black or dark spots and stripes giving it the tabby pattern, although it can also have the colour of fawn, blue, tawny, chocolate, cinnamon and lavender and all usually come with a silvery base colour. The Ocicat has a neat, short hair coat that is silky to the touch and usually very sleek and shiny when in good condition as the cat spends a lot of its time grooming itself. Ocicats have stunning, symmetrical faces and bright eyes that are usually brown, gold or hazel/green.

Because of their fantastic personalities and perfect balance of cuddly and playful, they make great family pets and get on well with children, babies and adults of all ages. They suit any home because they are so independent and don't require a lot of fuss. If you have a family who all go to school, college and work, for example, the Ocicat will go in an out as she or he pleases and return home when the family does, entertaining itself with the outside world until then. As a kitten, the Ocicat will try to climb up curtains, chase wires and jump onto any surface it sees so it may be best to buy it as a kitten when you have a holiday and it can be watched closely until it is old enough to develop common sense!
