Blank page to inspiration: The writer's odyssey

Staring at a blank page to become inspired is a losing battle for me. In order to get over this hurdle, I write down every oddball thought, every insane musing, ever fragmented idea and then I begin building my piece. Granted, many times my original inspiration gets lost in the words that flow from my fingers producing something completely different from my original thoughts.

A writer's inspiration can come out of nowhere. Scribbling down that sudden, out of nowhere phrase on a blank sheet of paper might not seem worthwhile, especially at two in the morning. However, When it finally hits, don't procrastinate, write it all down. Rough drafts of an idea can easily evolve in to full fledge stories. Work on forming an idea around your three-word inspiration or a new muse for the day. It will never be too late to re-write it later. Ideas or fragments of ideas might be something that cannot be regained at a later date.

There have been many nights I dragged myself from bed to peck out a simple line and find myself writing until the sun comes up. Lack of sleep is never an issue when I am on a roll. I can sleep when I am brain dead but as long as the idea juices are flowing I feel a certain agonizing sense of betrayal to myself and my ideas if I leave them in my mind to be forgotten.

As writers, we find a story in some of the most mundane every day occurrences. Taking advantage of this knowledge will have the writer constantly asking questions and paying attention to detail. For example, milking a cow seems like a boring, tedious job and one that most wouldn't find the need to write about. On the other hand, writing about the entire process can assist in finding the humorous side and can make something as simple as clipping toenails in to a tale of how-to's and funny anecdotes.

Inspiration can jump out at the most inopportune times or come from close friends and family. A heated debate over dinner turns in to a whirlwind of story ideas and plots. Political issues discussed at a dinner party gives solid debatable issues to build on and from there aide in developing ideas and theories.

Pay attention to the unusual, the oddly quirky and possibly the unexplained. Take that empty notepad and fill it up with every out of nowhere thought that might come along. There is no reason to ever have to sit for hours on end again feeling uneasy. Inspiration to a writer is almost as important as oxygen. Look within yourself if you are intimidated by that blank piece of paper and find that inspiration that is needed. After all, at the end of the day when a work is completed it doesn't matter what the inspiration was, only the fact that it was indeed inspired.
