Tips for first-time and infrequent travelers

If you don't travel a lot, there are several things you need to know about traveling for your own safety as well as peace of mind. Here are some tips to keep your trip as safe and enjoyable as possible.

1. Make sure you have everything you need packed before you leave the house. It may even be a good idea to pack all your bags before you leave the house. Making sure you have everything you need before you leave will save you from an inconvenient trip to the store in the middle of your vacation. It may not be a huge hassle if you have to stop by the store, but it can slow things down if you have a lot planned.

2. Know where your purse/money/valuables are at all times. Keep them close to you. If you have to leave your purse with someone, be sure it's someone you trust. If you can't take all your valuables with you, leave them in the hotel room, not your car. It's much easier to break into. Don't bring expensive and important items with you if you're not going to use them.

3. Don't bring more than what you need on the trip. It will just be extra stuff to worry about and lug around. When you're packing, think to yourself 'do I really need this?' before putting each item into your bag. If you don't need it, don't bring it. Only take the things that are necessary.

4. Plan ahead on what hot spots you want to see and where you want to go. You don't have to plan out every little detail of what you're going to do on the trip, but it's good to have an idea so you won't be overwhelmed by all the advertisements and attractions in the area.

5. Know what your budget is, especially if you're going to an area that has a lot of attractions. Odds are you'll be tempted to do something and spend money on something that wasn't on your list. Know before you leave exactly how much money you can spend during the trip.

6. Have patience. Even if you're trip goes relatively well, there will probably be moments that you'll feel frustrated because you didn't get to do something you wanted to or you're having to deal with long lines. Just try not to let everything get to you. Otherwise the trip just won't be very enjoyable for you or the people you're traveling with.

7. Be willing to try something new. See as many of the attractions and fun places as you can. Do something you've never done before. Learn about things you don't know about. You might regret it later if you don't.

And most importantly have a fun trip!
