Bible study: Ecclesiastes

We are all searching. Searching for the meaning of life; searching for what truly makes us alive. Searching for what makes us tick. But along our journey, we lose the joy of searching. We feel lost. We quit. We forget the purpose of life because it just seems meaningless.

One of the lessons I learned in Ecclesiastes is the importance of life. How should we live our life? What is life all about? Although life at times may seem insignificant to us, the book doesn't say to stop living. I've realized I tend to take my life for granted. I push God aside and ask for help when I am incapable of doing it on my own. Ecclesiastes states that it is wrong. God has given us life as a reward. Life is one of the most precious gifts God has blessed us with. But as sinful creatures, our relationship with God sometimes isn't our number one priority.

Life under the sun is like chasing after the wind. We work hard, but in the end, we find ourselves in pain and grief. We try to accomplish what makes us happy, hoping to find joy, but find meaningless instead. How is that possible? Well King Solomon tried everything in life. He thought those pleasures could satisfy him, but he found emptiness. He had everything, yet he had nothing. He had trouble with involving God in his life.

With God in our lives, it doesn't mean we don't have the capacity to enjoy life. In Ecclesiastes 8:15 it says, I commend the enjoyment of life, because nothing is better for a man under the sun than to eat and drink and be glad. We can drink and be merry but within the boundaries. The boundaries aren't bad. Through that we discover His importance in our life. I see God's gift like a present. It is filled with many layers; each layer we take off is when we discover more about life. When we get closer to the last layer, that is when we truly understand the importance of God and the meaning of life.
