The best TV comedies of the 1960s

by Mary Cardamon

Some of the best TV comedies came from the 1960s. In my opinion, this decade was one of the best for TV comedies. I think that the 1960s were the true golden age for Television. I would rather watch a show that was on in the 1960s than anything on TV today. I have no interest in the shows of the past twenty five years.

The best shows that have been on TV in that period of time are, Hill Street Blues, St. Elsewhere, and Home Improvement. All you see on the tv shows of today are sex, drugs, abortions, and strong adult language. Why cant they make the TV shows of today, more like was on back in the 1960s?

My list of the best TV comedies of the 1960's are as follows,

1) My number one choice is The Andy Griffith Show. This show as never left the airwaves forty one years after it went off of the air. What classic TV fan would not want to visit Mayberry, North Carolina day after day? The antics of the memorable characters will always make me laugh.

Who could not forget the tumbling Deputy Sheriff Barney" Fearless Fife"? played by one of the funniest comedians of all time. The late Don Knotts. I felt that he was the show. My favorite episodes with Don Knotts at his best are, the Great Filling Station Robbery, were Barney tries to catch the thieve by taking a picture of him.

Unfortunately, Barney ends up taking a picture of himself. I also loved Don Knotts playing alongside of Gomer Pyle, Jim Neighbors. An example of this is the episode, the Song Festers, were Gomer's singing outshines Barneys.

You can see in this classic episode that, Barney is jealous of Gomer's get to sing the tenor lead in the Mayberry choir. The most moving scene in this episode is when, Gomer goes into the rehearsing hall to get his sheet music. Barney, just happens to have been present at the rehearsal.

Gomer sees a hurt Barney standing alongside of the piano signing the song to himself. It is then, that Gomer realizes just how hurt Barney real is.

And who could not forget Andy Taylor, Barney's sidekick and not always playing the straight man to Barneys antics. Andy usually always has to come and bail Barney out of trouble. Andy Griffith was up to playing alongside of Don Knotts.

And who could not forget the other memorable citizens of Mayberry? Aunt Bee, Andy's loving aunt who not only raised the widowed Andy himself, but she has come to live with Andy to help him raise his loyal and trustworthy son, Opie.

The best thing about the Griffith Show for me was that is was that every episode was about love. Love is something that you rarely see on Television today.

2) My second choice would have to be Get Smart. The not so bright spy for Control Maxwell Smart, played by anther great comedian, Don Adams, he was born to play Maxwell Smart. No other actor could have played him better then Adams himself. Barbara Feldon was perfect as Max's loyal partner 99.

The spy with no real first name. In the forth season 99 became MISS'S 86. These two great actors were great with each other. The way they were able to play of one anther was incredible.

3) I Dream Of Jeannie, I feel that this show was a lot better than Bewitched, I think I Dream Of Jeannie was more creative and original then Bewitched. The story lines and cast were better.

I loved the pink puff of smoke that Jeannie would appear and disappear in. I also loved the inside of her bottle, and the way she pampered Major Nelson.

Larry Hagman and Barbara Eden were the perfect team to play the two main characters of the show.

4) My Three Sons. I think that this show along with the Andy Griffith Show were the two best family comedies of the 1960's. Both of these shows were about love.

They both taught us great family values that I feel are just as important today, as they were in the 1960's. These type of family shows don't play as well today as they did in the 60's and 70's.

5) The Adams Family. I have always preferred this show over The Munsters. I loved cousin It and Thing. I thought they were more interesting and original then Herman and Grandpa Munster.

I also loved the other characters of the show. Pugsly and Wednesday, were great together. And I loved Lurch, the loyal and lovable family butler.

Some honorable mentions are, Hogan's Hero's, Family Affair, and Laugh In.

I will always long for the good old days of TV. While these shows are no longer in production, they will always be around in reruns. Making and taking the hearts of younger people today.
