Easy ways to handle your stress

by Ann E. Smith

You live during stressful times, and it is crucial for you to learn to manage your personal stress. After all, there is no way to avoid some stressful things. It's really about how you react to them.

Some people choose unhealthy ways to deal with their problems and hassles: drinking, drugs, spending too much money and overeating. While some of these things may be okay in small doses, people often overdo such habits and cause themselves increased damage and stress.

So what are some healthier things you can do to cope with life's challenges? Below are some easy ways to handle your stress.

* Exercise on a regular basis. Do cardio during times of high stress.

Exercise is one of the best stress relievers you can choose. Cardio exercise is particularly good for helping with frustration and stress. Try to include working out as a regular part of your routine. That will keep stress at bay.

And when something really stressful does happen, go for a longer and more strenuous jog than usual. Or go to a kick boxing class. You will feel some of the stress leaving your body as you push yourself physically.

* Take some deep breaths.

During the work day, you are often faced with unexpected stress. Perhaps your boss is in a particularly bad mood and wants to take it out on you. Maybe a deadline has been moved up, and you must meet it.

Get in the habit of taking some deep breaths when you feel anxiety creeping up on you. And if possible, get out of your cube and go for a brisk walk. It does not have to be a long one, but just get moving.

* Count to ten.

Stress can cause you to snap, and sometimes say things you should not say. When you are in a situation in which you need to stay in control, such as at work, then silently count to ten when you feel angry or stressed. It can buy you some time, and help you collect your thoughts before reacting in a way you will regret.

* Listen to music.

Music is a wonderful thing. It speaks to the soul. It can also be calming. Try listening to your favorite music when commuting home from a long day in the office. It will help you unwind.

* Talk about it.

Sometimes when you have things on your mind, you just need to talk to someone. Do you have a trusted spouse or close friend with whom you can share some of your anxieties and fears? Do you see a therapist?

It takes a certain kind of courage to admit some of your doubts or thoughts, but it can be very helpful. By talking through certain things, you may find that you find the solutions that you need. Or you may just feel much better.

These are a few examples of easy ways to handle your stress. One way to keep stress from building up too much is to make sure you take good care of yourself. When you do that and use some of these tactics, then your stress should be much more manageable.
