Top 10 simple ways to be green

Let's face it - most people won't even think about going green unless it is relatively easy. By taking these baby steps, you can start to go green today without feeling like your world has been turned upside down. By making a few small changes to your daily routine, you can help save the planet without having to completely change the way you live. Small lifestyle modifications eventually add up to big changes, so get started today and start saving the planet for tomorrow!

1. Use less paper
By now, pretty much every store I walk into has the cloth reusable bags that you can buy on your way to the registers. Even the unexpected stores like our local video rental place, has cloth bags available for purchase.

While cloth bags, either purchased or handmade, are a great start, it is also a good idea to do a quick check of your lifestyle and figure out what other paper products you can live without. For example, I haven't used paper towels in over a year and I do not miss them one bit. We also use cloth napkins, and cloth rags for the garage, and we have switched to paperless billing. All quick and small changes to make that add up to a lot of paper saved.

If you do use paper, remember to recycle it, and any other recyclable materials you use!

2. Switch to reusable containers.
I used to use a lot of disposable containers and wraps for food. Tin foil, plastic wrap, one-time use sandwich bags, etc. Then, I discovered an amazing set of glass containers that can go in the freezer and in the dishwasher. After using these, I never went back to the disposable stuff.

But what about lunches and food that you need to carry with you to work? For the lunches that I take with me, I have switched to using a tiffin (a metal lunchbox), bento boxes (small, plastic lunchboxes), reusable canteens and cups (instead of bottled water), utensils made from bamboo, and reusable bags to carry everything. It is just convenient to pack everything up in the morning, and I have found that giving the containers a quick rinse when I am finished with lunch is not much more time consuming than throwing away disposable containers.

3.Change your cleaning habits.
Instead of reaching for toxic chemicals, try some crumpled up newspaper and vinegar to get streak free windows. When you are washing your clothes, use cold water instead of hot whenever possible. Try line drying your clothing instead of sticking it in the dryer for an hour. Use baking soda as a scrubby cleaner. Remove protein based stains with hydrogen
