Atonement
Chapter 1
Corey, a lost soul without a body has been wandering among the livings for years waiting for a right body to replace the dead existing soul; but so far he had no luck. He had no recollection of how and when he died. He was a pure soul without a past. Somehow, he believed his situation was a punishment from God. Perhaps, he was allowed to have a chance to redeem himself for his wrongdoings from his previous life and until he fixed it, God would lead him to his destination and allowed his soul to rest eternally. However, he wondered how he could redeem himself when he had no clue what he had done wrong in the past in order for him to fix his mistake.
Corey spent most of the time in the hospital waiting for the perfect opportunity. Tonight, same as any other night, while strolling around the hospital, he passed by a room and he heard laughter. Through the small window, he looked in and he saw a young woman in her twenties giggled while holding to a young man's hand, presumably her husband. She had her wedding band on her left ring finger. Her reaction was not quite appropriate for the situation. According to her husband's medical chart, he has been in a coma for more than two weeks after the car accident. His wife was perfectly fine except for a few stitches on her left arm.
At first Corey used reverse psychology to guess her strange reaction. He thought she might have gone through the denial stage knowing her husband was dying. She came to the hospital to check on him for no longer than fifteen minutes every single day then she left him alone with the hospital staffs. Only her husband's family members came to spend time with him. She treated her in-laws as they were strangers.
After leaving the hospital, she drove to a nice and expensive restaurant to have dinner by herself. She ordered a nice bottle of wine as if she was celebrating. She poured the wine into the glass, she smelled the content with a happy smile, she swirled the wine with satisfaction. Her dinner seemed delicious but she barely touched the food.
Corey has been observing her for weeks. Her lifestyle was quite normal, nothing was out of ordinary. One thing he was quite sure was she didn't go after his money or to collect any kind of insurance. While her husband stayed in the hospital, she has been all alone all these times. She had no extra-marital affair and no close friends.
After one whole month, regardless
