Video games have become a part of our popular culture. It is not just young children and teenagers that play these games. Adults too are playing videogames for several reasons.
Relaxation
Video games allow older adults to relax after a hard day. These games allow the user to enter a different world and forget the one they are leaving behind. Adults may play video games out of boredom and just need something to do. Some games such as strategy games where you need to think can help to keep the brain active. Some older adults may continue to play video games because they simply like playing them and have fun doing so. Playing games may also bring back memories of youth for some adults.
Social Problems
Some adults may continue to play video games due to social problems. They may have trouble interacting with other people in the real world. They could have trouble making friends or don't have any to begin with. Playing video games and especially multiplayer games can make a person feel like they belong somewhere especially if they join an online group or clan to play the game. Older adults who don't have a partner may play multiplayer games in an attempt to meet somebody and form a relationship or they may just be looking for more friends. Online multiplayer games have a large community of players and you can sometimes find players that you can really relate to that might share your common interests outside of gaming.
Addiction
Adult video game players may suffer from addiction. If someone plays a game for a long period they may become attached to their character or just want to beat the game. Adults who are addicted to games may also have other problems in life which may include financial, social, relationship, or work related issues. The game player may use the game as a way of forgetting about things that may be a problem in their life.
Exercise
Some new games such as those that can be played on the Nintendo Wii system have introduced the ability to exercise while playing games. Older adults may play these types of games as a way to get a small amount of exercise. Seniors or those with mobility issues can play Wii games for some basic exercise.
Quality Time With Family
Older adults may play video games as a way of interacting with their children. They can compete against a child for the top score. A father can race a car with a small boy or play a game of soccer. Married couples or those with partners may join together in multiplayer games. This is quite popular in role playing style games.
Video games are not just for children. Many older adults continue to play video games and get just as much enjoyment out of them. Some play the games with family, to relax or for some exercise with the Wii game system. Other adults may play games to escape from real life, social problems, or may be addicted to the game.
