Owning a gun

by Joshua Mccracken

Created on: May 29, 2009

Gun ownership is not simply a means for protecting oneself from those who may pose a danger within our society, but also a means of protection from the government, which as noted, can sometimes be pretty malevolent. Our right to bear arms is part of what keeps us free. Would the government dare violate our civil rights, enter our homes and place political dissidents in prison camps if we are all armed? No, of course not. Though that scenario may seem unrealistic, there are countries where that is happening and in those countries guess who is unarmed? That's right, the average citizen is unarmed because those atrocities could not occur when people have the ability to defend themselves.

Nations where gun ownership is prevalent are also far less likely to be successfully invaded. Who wants to invade a country where virtually every adult citizen already has the means to fight back? Our right to bear arms is a fundamental part of the American way of life. The agenda of anyone interested in undermining that should be subject to some serious scrutiny.

Contrary to claims made by gun control advocates, less legal firearms does not equate to less crime. It only ensures that the populace is unable to defend itself from dangerous criminals who prey on them. Restricting our ability to carry firearms even only in certain circumstances actually creates some of the problems that gun control advocates claim to be interested in fixing. How bad would the Virgina tech incident have been if the students had legal firearms and permits to carry them and they were allowed to be armed on their college campus? Would the perpetrator of the massacre have been able to slaughter so many?

In countries where gun ownership is extraordinarily common there is far less crime. Why? Because people can and will shoot back and the criminals know it. Those who would prey on their countrymen in other circumstances are forced to think twice before doing it under this sort of climate that could be potentially fatal for them.

In the USA there is around 80,000,000 gun owners yet only around 1,500 accidental deaths caused by firearms a year. There are about 120,000 deaths caused by medical accidents and about 700,000 doctors which means that about 171 people per doctor die a year. With these statistics our beloved benevolent doctors are far more dangerous than guns. No, it isn't the gun that is dangerous but the person wielding it and America needs more responsible and legal gun owners to help counter
