While hair loss is a natural part of ageing, it is now a worrying trend to note many men are experiencing hair loss at a younger age. So what could be done to prevent hair loss in men? I would like to offer these pointers for readers consideration.
Hair loss could be caused by genetic factors or by biological and environmental factors. For hair losses which are caused by genetic factors such as Male Pattern Baldness, one could seek medical treatments such as the oral consumption of drugs like Propecia and the topical application of Regaine (containing an active ingredient called Minoxidil which inhibits the formation of DHT that destroys hair follicles) onto the scalp. These two drugs have been scientifically proved to promote new hair growth. But the caveat is that one must use these two drugs continuously else the newly grown hair may continue to drop upon the discontinuation of the drug treatment. Genetic male pattern baldness often runs in the family, whereas the father of the hair loss sufferer would also have experienced baldness before.
For hair losses caused by biological and environmental factors, one should see results by tweaking his lifestyle. Stress is often associated with hair loss. It is common to witness increased hair shedding in periods of high stress and anxiety caused by either work or other commitments; the crux is for one to learn to cope with stress,
Equally important is adopting a healthy lifestyle, by ensuring a balanced diet daily. Eat more fruits and vegetables, avoid oily and greasy food and eat some protein (for a lack of proteins may result in hair loss too). For the busy professionals toiling long hours at work and who may miss lunch or dinner regularly, they could invest in multi-vitamins to compensate for the vitamins and minerals which they lack. Another point to note is sufficient sleep. Sleep is the period when our body recuperates and the repairing of the scalp takes place. Insufficient sleep will often causes hair loss, so ensure you have at least 8 hours a sleep daily to ward off hair loss! Invest in some regular exercises weekly too for they too will help boost the health of the body and of course, of the scalp and hair.
Hair loss could also be caused by the wrong use of shampoos, the frequent use of chemicals that is applied to the scalp and the wrong way of shampoo! Ensure that the shampoo you use is the most suitable to your scalp. Avoid regular harsh treatments of hair such as dying and waxing. It will also help if one learns to shampoo the right way: deeply and thoroughly. Unwashed shampoos left on the scalp may aggravate hair loss by irritating the scalp. If in doubt, one should consult a trichologist.
Hair loss could also be caused by the consumption of some drugs and chemical treatments such as chemotherapy. However, this kind of hair loss is temporary and should stop with the termination of the consumption of drugs and chemical treatments.
In a nutshell, men who are suffering from hair loss should explore the aforementioned methods to combat their receding hairline before it is too late!
