Many professionals do not have the time to devote to organizations such as Lions, Rotary or other similar service organizations that are in need of volunteers on a regular basis. However, there are some significant benefits to you and to your business if you get involved in these groups. Even if you do not have time to join an organization as a full participating member, there are several reasons to volunteer your professional services to non-profit organizations. Let us take a look at some of them.

1. Free Publicity - Stop and consider the impact being associated with a non-profit group can have on your business. Let us assume for one moment that your best skill is writing. You could volunteer to publish a monthly or quarterly newsletter for your local Lions Club or Rotary Club. You could then include your company name as "Newsletter Published by" in each edition. This means that every member of that Lions Club or Rotary Club would know about your skills.

2. Tax Deduction - Think about the tax benefits of giving back to a local non-profit organization. Regardless of what you have to offer, legal skills, bookkeeping skills, web-design or a myriad of other skills that might be of value; you can make a different in a non-profit organization and get the added benefit of a tax deduction. You should ensure that you are operating within Internal Revenue Service code for all non-profit deduction rules.

3. It feels good - Let us face it. Finding a way to be an active participant in a non-profit organization means you are making a difference in the lives of others. This means you feel good about what you are doing to help others who might be in need. Not everyone has the time to devote to monthly meetings, fund-raising events and other activities, but, being able to volunteer your professional services at a non-profit organizations means you are contributing.

4. Good Neighbor - You want your business to be viewed as a good neighbor in your community. Volunteering professional services to a non-profit organization will show that you are serious about making a difference in your community, not just making money from the residents. It is always smart business sense to highlight your accomplishments, but being a good neighbor can bring you additional business and raise awareness of your business.

These are only a few reasons why it is sensible to volunteer professional services at a non-profit. Everyone has something to offer. Whether you are a brick-layer, a writer, a lawyer, your skills may be needed by a local non-profit. Get involved in your community by volunteering professional services at a non-profit today.
