Sonia Sotomayor-The President's Pick
Should the U.S. Senate confirm Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court? Absolutely! Sonia Sotomayor is a breath of fresh air the United States desperately needs. She is the embodiment of those principles this nation was founded upon; principles we seem to have forgone and forgotten.
Over the past several years, our flag has developed holes and burn marks of our own device. We have been led astray by imbeciles bent on furthering their own agenda at our expense, who sit, right now, laughing at us while they count their bonus money which they stole under the guise of contract, exploitation and favor. How dare they!
We have had eight years of an administration who have allowed this to happen; who cannot even recognize torture, or worse, recognize it for what it is and wrap it in the flag to hide it. How dare they!
We are at a crossroads. We have a new president, dressed to the nines, perfect family, eloquent, idealistic with a vision; A vision that will make us strong again. Perhaps! If we let him; If we work with him; If we support him. If he can survive amidst the pundits and talking heads and bouncing, boorish, self-righteous radio announcers who appear to have some of the strongest, highly trained political minds of the day on their knees wailing, "Please, Rush, I am so sorry for what I said. You really are a god"; albeit, a false one. What are we doing? Have we all lost our minds?
Then, along comes Sonia Sotomayor, picked by our new President, as a nominee for the Nation's highest court. She is bright, well-educated with a world value system second to none. She more than a been there; done that person. She is a "been there; done that; and done it well" person. She is a woman. She is a Latino woman. She has climbed every step of the ladder of success. She has earned this. Yet, all some can do is criticize and when that doesn't work, degrade and humiliate.
No doubt this type of commentary hurts, not only Sonia Sotomayor, but every one of us at our most basal level. But if she can survive, and a Latino woman may be the only woman whose fire is greater than what she must walk through, it will be yet another stitch to reinforce and repair our flag and our country.
Should Sonia Sotomayor be confirmed as a Justice to the Supreme Court? Emphatically, no resoundingly, Yes! We need this person. We need to know there is someone who understands our people and not just our politicians. We need someone who understands us as a people trying to live in a world based and values and trust rather than gunpowder and worse.
I am not so naive to think that all will be well by her appointment or that all will be well in our lifetime, or our children's lifetime. There will be always those who try to take advantage; to lie, cheat and steal; to try and take all that we are. I am simply saying we need all the help we can to fix what is broken, one stitch at a time. We need someone like Sonia Sotomayor, as much as, we need each other to survive; to stand proud in the face of adversity; to not sell out for silver. In that is our true treasure and the true measure of who we are.
Our nation was built in a simpler time. Perhaps, things were clearer then, as to what America truly is. Perhaps clarity in this awful time is someone like Sonia Sotomayor. Only time and a chance to shine will tell. We have no right to take that chance away from her or from ourselves. Should Sonia Sotomayor be confirmed? Yes! No let's get on with it.
