Suddenly, Megan cried hysterically as she managed to blurt out, "Why can't I have a baby?" She sat in front of her bedroom mirror and brushed her shoulder length black hair, as she thought about her desire to have a child. We've been married for five years, and I don't understand why we can't have children. If I had a child to love and care for during the day while Bill works, I wouldn't be as lonely, and we could both spend time with our baby in the evening.
As Megan continued to question the idea of having a baby, her eyes filled with tears, and she started crying. The tears streamed down the sides of Megan's face, so she headed toward the bathroom in order to grab some tissues to wipe her tears away, but as Bill dashed out of the bathroom, he almost knocked her down. He grabbed her and helped her over to the bed.
"Sweetheart, why are you crying?" Bill asked, as he embraced her.
"I'm lonely during the day, and since we've been married for five years, I thought about having a baby," Megan replied.
"Honey, I know you want a baby, and I'd like to have one, too, but remember what the doctor told us last month? He said we couldn't have children," Bill said.
"I remember, but I'd like to have a baby," Megan responded, as she put her hands up to her face and cried. In a few minutes, she said, "Do think the doctor didn't want us to have children because I was black and you were white?"
"I wondered about that, too, so I talked to him privately, and he assured me that he wasn't against us being together and wanting children. He also suggested we think about adoption."
"I'm glad because I still have a strong desire to have a child. How do feel about having children with me since I'm black and you're white?"
"Megan, that doesn't make any difference to me because I married you for who you are and because I love you. You're a beautiful, caring person, and I know you'd make a wonderful mother, so let's discuss adopting a child."
"Oh, Bill, thank you for saying that. I love you, too, and I'd like to talk about adoption," Megan replied.
Megan thought about adopting a child might be a great solution for them as long as an adoption agency would realize they would make good parents even though she was black and Bill was white. She hoped that wouldn't make a difference to the agency, and they would allow them to have a child. "We've never talked about adopting a child, but I like that idea."
"It is a good option for us since we can't have children naturally, so if you want to adopt a child, you can call an adoption agency," Bill said.
"Thanks, Bill for understanding. I will call them."
"It's my desire to have a baby, too, and I think it would be exciting to have a child we could raise," Bill smiled, as he embraced her.
"I'd like to work part-time, too," Megan commented.
"Megan, I don't think an adoption agency would like it if we told them we wanted to adopt a child, and then said you wanted to work and leave the child with a sitter part-time."
"You're right, but I'm sure we could work out something."
After Megan was dressed, she walked into the kitchen to fix breakfast. As she prepared the meal, she thought about working at home and having children. She wondered what kind of work she could do at home that would allow her to have time to take care of a baby. Then, she thought about the idea of having an older child because it would be easier to take care of an older child and still work at home. Shortly, she blurted out, "I've got it!"
"Got what?" Bill asked, as he entered the kitchen.
"I thought about adopting an older child, such as a younger elementary age child because that age would be easier to take care of while I work at home."
"That's probably a good idea, so have you thought about the kind of work you would like to do at home?"
"I thought about continuing my freelance writing business and taking care of a child. I've always wanted to start up my writing career again, so I could write stories and books for children and maybe get something published, and I could do typing for people or businesses."
"You've come up with a great idea about working at home and taking care of a child. I might even like to work at home as a freelance writer, too. That way, we can both take care of a child."
"While you're at work this morning, I can call an adoption agency to find out some information, so when you come home at 1:00, I can let you know what I found out," Megan said.
After they embraced, Bill left for work, and while Megan cleaned up their apartment, she thought about what she would say to the adoption agency. She thought she would see about infants or an older child, but she didn't want a child who was too old. When she had the apartment clean, she called an adoption agency. "This is Megan Green. My husband and I are interested in adopting a baby or an older child, but not too old."
"My name is Miss Roberts. Is there a time when you and your husband could come and talk with Miss Johnson and me?"
"My husband said he would be home at 1:00."
"How about 2:00 today?"
"That will be fine."
"You will need to fill out an application for adoption, and then you will need to set up a few interviews with us, so we can get acquainted with you and your husband."
"That's fine."
When Megan hung up the phone, she started cooking lunch, so it would be ready when Bill came home. She prepared macaroni and cheese with peas and tuna, and she opened up a can of peaches and made Iced Tea. As soon as she finished cooking the meal, Bill came home.
"Hi, Sweetheart," Bill said, as he embraced her. "How was your morning?"
"I had a good morning. I called an adoption agency just before noon, and they can visit with us about adopting a child at 2:00 today."
"We better hurry and eat lunch because it's already 1:00."
"I also told Miss Roberts that I might be interested in adopting an older child, but one who wasn't too old."
"What did she say?"
"She told me that she had a little girl named Cassie who was six-years-old who needed a permanent home."
"I think having a six-year-old would be all right even though I originally thought about adopting a baby, but we could communicate with the little girl, and we wouldn't have to deal with the infant stage and diapers," Bill replied.
"I'd like any age, but it might be nice to have an older child because we could communicate with them and do more activities instead of going through the baby stages."
"That's true, but I'd like to meet the girl before we make a decision about adopting an older child."
"We better hurry and eat so we can go to the adoption agency because we want to make a good impression by being a little early," Megan suggested.
After they finished eating their lunch, Megan cleaned up the kitchen, and then she picked up her purse and sweater. Bill met her at the door, and then they climbed into his car and headed for the adoption agency.
When they arrived, Miss Roberts handed them the adoption application and a pen. She showed them to a table where they could sit comfortably and fill out the forms. When they completed the application, they had an interview with Miss Roberts and Miss Johnson. During the interview, Miss Roberts said, "I didn't realize that you were black and your husband was white."
"Does that make a difference?" Megan asked, with a concerned expression. She wanted the adoption to work out because she wanted a child, and this might be her only chance.
"Oh no. It's just perfect because Cassie is part black and part white, so now that I've met you, I think Cassie would fit in perfectly in your family."
"Can we meet her?" Bill asked.
"Sure. She's been staying with a foster family, so I called them, and they brought her here for you to meet her."
"That would be great."
Megan and Bill smiled as a cute brown haired six-year-old girl walked into the room with her foster family. "Cassie, this is Mr. and Mrs. Green."
"Hi. It's nice to meet you. Do you want to adopt me?"
Megan smiled when Cassie came right out and asked the question. Then, she responded. "You seem like a nice, well-mannered child, and I'd like to get acquainted with you because we are interested in adopting a child."
"Hi, Cassie. Would you like to live with us?" Bill asked.
"Yes because you seem like nice people, and I want a family who wants to adopt me."
After they talked for a half hour, Bill told Miss Roberts that they wanted to adopt Cassie. Miss Roberts told them she was pleased with their decision because she felt they would be a perfect couple for Cassie, and they wanted to place her in a permanent home. She also told them they needed to fill out some more forms, and they needed to agree to visitations in their home in order to make sure everything was going to work out for them in adopting Cassie.
After a few months and several interviews, they adopted Cassie.
