How to make your computer faster

5 tips to speed up your computer

You have a computer. You were happy with it, but lately it seems... slower. Is it you, or is it really taking longer to do things? Here are 5 easy things you can do to speed up your Windows computer.

#1. Make sure you have free space on your C drive.

Every Windows computer has at least one drive, and it's the C drive. That is where all the system files and many program files are stored. You might only have one drive which means everything is on the C drive. You need free space on the C drive so your computer can move files around as needed. If your drive is too full, then your computer moves files around a lot more than it needs too, and this slows it down. Go through your files and programs, and remove the ones you don't use or don't need. You can transfer pictures and videos to CD or USB drives to keep them but help free up space. A good amount to aim for is 10% of the drive should be free. So if you have a 100G drive, aim to keep about 10G free.

#2. Defragment your hard drive

Once you have free space on your drive, you can defragment or defrag it. When your computer saves files to the drive, they are not saved in one big chunk. Often they are saved in smaller chunks all over the place. Then when the computer goes to read the file it has to jump all over the place which takes longer. Defragging your drive puts all the pieces back together and all the free spaces together. This can actually free up space on your drive as well as making things faster. The one drawback is that a defrag can take a long time to finish if you haven't done it lately. In explorer go to My Computer, and right-click on a drive, select Properties, and then tools. One of the options will be Defragmentation - Defragment now. Select this, and then select Drive C:. Choose analyze to see if you need to defrag, and then if it recommends it you can select defrag. Then sit back for a long rest while it does the work.

#3. Remove spyware

Spyware are programs that download onto your computer in the background without your knowledge and gather information about your computer and where you go on the internet. These programs then send that information to someone who can sell that information, or use it to commit crimes. For example, spyware can get your passwords to your bank account and transfer your money! There are many programs to find and remove spyware but one of the most popular is Ad-Aware from Lavasoft. This is easy
