Product reviews: Apple iPod with touchscreen

by Ally Hart

What you need to know about ipod touch: an owners point of view.

Technology seems to be ever growing class of its own providing the world with gadgets, gizmo's and literally power in the palm of your hands. As years have gone by, technology has progressed from simplicity of AM radios and rotary telephones to mp3 players and cell phones.

There are so many devices available for the average person today such as desk top computers, lap tops, hand held devices such as iphones, blackberry's and so much more.

One of todays most amazing and useful gadgets is The ipod touch. Apple released its first generation of Ipod touch in 2007, its second generation soon followed in 2008 deeming the touch as "the funnest ipod ever".

Cased in a sleek aluminum shiney body the ipod touch is unlike others of its kind. It has a beautiful 3.5" shiney glass multi-touch screen and two main buttons, the home button on the front of the device and the lock button on the top, which when held down for a few seconds acts as a power off button as well.

Inside the ipod touch it runs a 667 MHz processor with 512MB built in RAM. ipod touch can be purchased according to your storage capacity needs with 8, 16 or 32 gig built in flash drives and uses iphone OS 2.X technology. The first generation requires earphones (included with the ipod) however, the 2nd generation has built in speakers and earphone options.

There is no need to fuss and fumble over batteries with this device. Ipod touch has a built in rechargeable lithium ion battery. The charge time for the ipod touch 2nd generation is 4 hours while running time for video is 6 hours and audio 36 hours of battery use.

Getting in deeper with the ipod touch, lets discuss what you can do with it.

Besides listening to your favorite tunes you can also purchase and download music via the apple itunes store and download applications (programs) from apple's app store. users have to sign up for an itunes account and purchase most of the app stores content but they do offer a wide variety of free apps like the weather eye, my space app and lite versions of games to name a few.

There is pretty much an app for everything. Everyone from big gaming companies like EA and programmers just starting out release all kinds of apps almost daily. Apps for entertainment like poker or jokes, apps for social networking on websites like twitter and face book, apps for education and medical purposes as well as apps for productivity like email or even document writing. There are even children's learning apps for those daring enough to let little fingers touch the screen.

Everything on line must run through a wifi connection to access the Internet in many apps and of course the web browser itself, safari. Once you have wifi set up either through a home network or a public Internet hot spot (there's an app to help you find hot spots too!) your limit becomes pretty endless in the hand held mobile device world.

Through its physical beauty, sleek running system and tons of fun things to do the ipod touch has one ugly side. The price range for an ipod touch ranges from 299$ for 8gigs to 499$ for a 32gig at most retail stores like best buy or circuit city. Not a cheap gadget although people often post used ipods on community buy and sell websites as well such as kijiji.

Mine was purchased second hand for $160 with an ongoing two year warrenty. The only main concern when purchasing used is warrenty, scratched or cracked screen and dents which indicate tje device was dropped and mistreated, a lot of the time a breif drop on the floor can cause something inside to break, so ask about the devices history. Shopping around sometimes gets the deals unless you want it brand new then you will pay the price.

In conclusion, being an iPod touch owner and knowing people who also own one, I can honestly say it is the funnest ipod ever! Highly recommended as one of the best hand held devices on todays market.
