Deciding if the Beatles really were "bigger than Jesus"

by Nick Todd

Created on: May 28, 2009

Ahhh... John Lennon... He really was an amazing guy. But did he really have the right to say he was bigger than Jesus? Did he really know what he was talking about or was he on some kind of drug that made him feel bigger than he was. No doubt the Beatles were big. No doubt they had many, many hit records and songs. John Lennon was possibly one of the best musicians of the time. The truth of the matter is, John Lennon felt he had rights because of how much success he had, and as part of gloating in his success he was decided to say the famous 'Bigger than Jesus' line. Some people ask the question: was he saying this as in a warning to the people that they had their priorities in disorder, or was he saying that that he was BETTER than Jesus. Because he is dead, we really won't find that out.

For the first argument, it is possible to say this because the Beatles really were growing fast. The scary thing is that even though there might be protesters, John Lennon really lead a body of people; the young people of the time. Some of them would follow, belieive, proclaim anything he said, or Paul said for that matter. So, when Paul writes a song about Helter Skelter, it is interpreted by a mad murder, Charles Manson, as a song about killing. This proves that people really were following the Beatle's rule. They were really controlled by what the media, and the Beatles said. John Lennon and the Beatles, Ringo, George, and Paul really started a 'Revolution' of the young people being controlled.

Did John Lennon's comment turn people away from Christianity? Well.. maybe but did people worship John Lennon? Not really. But in a way, they kind of did in the way of thinking, morality and judgment. Anti-establishment and anti-war rallies were led in America by John himself. The government tried to tell John Lennon to leave the country. So what does he do in his belief he has power? He writes a song! He makes fun of the government. It really is a chain reaction and a foolish thing for anyone to doubt that John Lennon really did have power. He could marry a lady that supposedly broke up the Beatles and people would eventually except that. Because if John loved Yoko, the people loved Yoko. If John Lennon had power, the people had power. If John Lennon believed he was bigger than Jesus Christ, by God, maybe he was! If countries in Asia loved the Beatles, but were participants of religions not applicable to worshiping Jesus, maybe they were.
