While the concept of graphic design is somewhat simple, it is very difficult to determine an exact definition.
First, let's go to the experts. Merriam-Webster's online dictionary defines graphic design as "the art or profession of using design elements (as typography and images) to convey information or create an effect." In other words, the use of text and pictures to send a message.
The Cambridge Advanced Learner's Online dictionary defines graphic design as "the art of designing pictures and text for books, magazines, advertising, etc."
Finally, dictionary.com says that graphic design is "the art or profession of visual communication that combines images, words, and ideas to convey information to an audience."
All three of these definitions will do just fine. But we are going to combine them to create our own, brand new, definition. Let's define graphic design as "the art of visual communication that combines images, words, and ideas to create a desired effect, used for books, magazines, advertising, and other areas."
There are several key points within this definition that need to be discussed.
First, graphic design is not just the use of fancy pictures and computer tricks, as is sometimes thought. As our definition explains, effective graphic design combines images, words, and ideas into a cohesive message. Pictures alone are usually not enough to do that. At the same time, words alone are boring and ineffective, and ideas are nothing until put into action.
Secondly, graphic design is not used just to make something look good. While pleasing aesthetics are certainly a goal of graphic design, the true purpose of this profession is to convey a message, and to create a desired effect. Graphic designers seek to incite a desired feeling within those that view their work.
Finally, graphic design is used in a wide variety of ways. We are all aware of the use of graphic design to create nice-looking book covers and magazine layouts. It is also used in television and movies to create DVD covers and promotional posters. But graphic design is also used very extensively in the world of marketing and advertising. There are millions of brochures, posters, business cards, signs, logos, and websites out there that have been created by graphic designers. Every single one of them has been created with the primary goal of graphic design in mind: creating a desired effect. In the case of marketing materials, the desired effect is the positive promotion of a business or product.
Graphic design is a simple concept with a very complex definition and a wide range of applications. Becoming a graphic designer can be an exhilarating enterprise in an exciting world. When you begin designing things from a graphic designer's point of view, you begin to see the world in a whole new light.
