If you're like most individuals, you've probably heard a thing or two about making calls through the Internet but might not be sure about how to go about it. Called VoIP (that's short for Voice over Internet Protocol), this relatively new technology that enables you to take advantage of free global calling delivers incredible convenience and cost savings over traditional phone service. And yes, it's rapidly breaking into the consumer market.
With most industry analysts predicting that VoIP will become widespread over the next several years, consumers are beginning to catch on to the substantial benefits of the technology. In fact, this shift is expected to continue to dramatically improve the way we communicate and ultimately lower the price we pay for it.
What are the specific benefits of VoiP?
VoIP delivers a host of benefits to consumers including substantial savings on phone bills, as well as a variety of other value-added features such as multi-user voice conferencing and instant messaging that lets your contacts know of your availability.
VoIP is simple to set up as it works similar to a telephone line. However, instead of going through a line plugged into your wall, your calls will go through your Internet connection. By simply downloading VoIP software from a provider, you can begin to immediately make free online phone calls to anyone, almost anywhere in the world for free.
Are There Differences in VoIP Providers?
All VoIP providers are not created equal. With the growing demand for VoIP, new providers are sprouting up all the time. But, the companies that have the highest quality service and the most extensive distribution networks are those that have been around the longest.
You will want to make sure that any VoIP provider that you select offers free PC to phone calling; as opposed to only PC-to-PC calling (which can substantially limit your calling options). As well, you should have a clear understanding of a provider's limitations of where you can call for free and what the rates are for other global destinations before you make a decision.
What Equipment Is Needed?
One of the biggest benefits of using VoIP is that you don't need to purchase extensive amounts of expensive equipment to take advantage of the technology. Once you've downloaded the software to your PC, calls can be made from your telephone linked to the Internet, a USB phone, or with a headset attached to your computer. If your computer has a built-in microphone and speakers, you can use that, too.
To make a call, you simply need to start the program on your computer and enter the phone number that you wish to call. The call will be connected, and you'll be able to talk without having to worry about racking up expensive long distance charges. VoIP is truly an incredibly, easy-to-use technology that will save you money from the day you start to use it!
