Roommates can be great or a nightmare. However, even in the best situations there are bound to be positive and negative aspects to having a roommate.
Living with another person means there must be compromise or you will end up killing each other. Your roommate is bound to do some things differently than you and they are bound to have at least one habit that totally annoys you.
On the positive side, having a roommate cuts your bills in half. It can help you save money on rent, utilities and if you have similar enough taste food. Saving money in this economy is a great thing and having a roommate is a way to cut some costs.
In addition to the financial benefits, having a roommate is nice beause it gives you someone to come home to. There is another person there to vent to about your day, to have dinner with, to interact with. Sometimes it can get very lonely living by yourself. When you have a roommate you have someone around to share stuff with, if you choose to. It will also help you grow and learn how to interact and live with people. When you have a roommate it helps you be less selfish because you have to consider your roommate, it's not all about what you want.
But there are definitely bad roommates, and if you have or have had one of these it can make you never want to live with someone again. Having a roommate that is rude or inconsiderate can be a nightmare, which is why it is important to choose your roommate wisely. Just because you are good friends does not mean that they are going to make a good roommate. Sometimes your best friday can be the worst roommate. Make sure your roommate has similar beliefs about cleaning and respecting your space. It is also really important to make sure they are financially responsible so you are not stuck trying to figure out how you are going to cover their half the rent.
One bad aspect of having a roommate is that you do not have as much privacy. You are living with another person and sometimes when you want to be alone and have the place to yourself you will not be able to because they are there.
With a roommate you will have to compromise and not always have things the way you want. You cannot just decide on your own how everything is going to work in the household. Because your roommate will have some different habits or quirks you will likely find that they get on your nerves every once in a while. You have to learn to adjust and not let your irritation turn in to a fight.
WIthout a roommate you are pretty much free to live how you want and do what you want in your place, but it is great to have someone there to share things with and help out with the rent and such. Just be sure to pick your roommate wisely and be willing to compromise.
