Two words: ABSOLUTELY NOT. While I pride myself on being a staunch Democrat with liberal views, I disagree with the party on this matter. How can one ILLEGALLY come into this country, and have access to MORE benefits and MORE privelege than those of us who were born and raised here...those of us who WORKED for these U.S. implemented benefits?
When I lost my job and couldn't afford COBRA, my son and I were declined any assistance because supposedly, even with unemployment insurance, I was above the poverty level. Forget the fact that I was born and raised in this country, been working since I was 16 years old, and NEVER needed a handout until now. Meanwhile, my paychecks all these years and even my unemployment insurance (come tax time) have been paying and will pay for assistance to individuals and families that are ILLEGALLY here in this country. Also remember that illegal immigrants don't pay taxes because they have no social security number or work visa, so we pay taxes for them. What a joke!
I have a friend whose credit was...well, not up to par. She had some past financial issues with an ex-boyfriend and co-signed on some things (against her better judgment), bringing her credit score down. She needed to find a new place, and they ran her credit. She was denied the apartment. Mind you, she works full-time, no complaints from her previous landlord or neighbors, and had more than enough money to pay the rent. The answer was still No. However, with some research on our part, we were able to find out that the majority of tenants in that same building were illegal aliens ON SECTION 8! How on earth are these illegal immigrants able to get assistance with no social security number? No references? Nothing! Meanwhile, those of us who were born here and have worked and struggled and done everything we could to make it get turned away when we fall on some hard times?
I find this very insulting. How can you be rewarded for committing a criminal and illegal act?! There is an e-mail that has been going around, and while I can't remember it verbatim, I will basically paraphrase it: Imagine someone breaking into your home. All the doors and windows are locked, but somehow, the person got into your home. While the person is in your home, he/she says they have a right to eat your food, watch your television, throw a party in your home, sleep in your bed, wear your clothes, etc. Not only do they have the right to live in your home like this, but YOU carry the burden of providing everything for them to live accordingly. After awhile, the person gets comfortable and enjoys the concept of being able to just settle wherever they wish and have housing, food, clothing, education, etc. provided for them, so they send for their family to come and live in your house with them, so they can enjoy these great benefits as well. You must take care of every need of each family member, just as you did with the original person that broke into your house. You must provide everything for them. Forget the fact that this person and this family have broken into your home, which is against the law. You are to overlook all that and take care of this person and his/her family. Even worse, you now don't have enough money or resources to take care of yourself and your own family because you must take care of these people that have committed a criminal act and violated you. Sounds crazy, doesn't it?
I believe that this world belongs to ALL of us, and anyone can live anywhere they please. However, if one chooses to live somewhere, they must do it legally. Like the old saying goes, "When in Rome, do as the Romans do".
