Whether you are a Cleveland native or you are just in town for the weekend, a trip to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum is a must for any music fan. The hall and museum have been located in Cleveland since 1994. The hall of fame itself is located at the center of the museum. It serves as the building's heart. Here you will be able to see the list of the artists of have been inducted to the Rock Hall. There are photographs, autographs, and looping film footage of inductees. But the hall is online the tip of the iceberg in terms of what this museum has to offer rock devotees.
Visitors are advised to start on the basement level of the museum. There you will watch a great fifteen minute documentary on the origins of rock music and the influence that blues, jazz, and country had on its formation. This floor of the museum also has rotating outfits and personal items from various artists on display. These relics include Keith Moon's drum set, original drawings by Jimi Hendrix, and stage costumes worn by Madonna. There is also a section dedicated to artists who were originally from Ohio. Even Midwesterners will be surprised by how many of their favorite bands originated in the Buckeye State.
The second floor of the museum has exhibits on how rock music was broadcast to the masses. There is footage of radio, television, and music videos from various decades. You may even witness a live broadcast from Magic 105.7, a local radio station that has its deejays on air live at the hall. It is also worth checking out the free jukebox that contains the 500 Greatest Rock Songs of All Time.
The upper levels are where the special exhibits are held. In the past exhibits have included; Elvis, John Lennon, The Who's Tommy, The Doors, The Psychedelic Era, and U2. Current exhibits on display include Bruce Springsteen and Motown.
Before you leave the Rock Hall you must check out the incredible gift store. You can purchase music or videos by or about your favorite artists. There are also vintage posters and autographed memorabilia for sale. It is the perfect end to a perfect day for any rock fan.
The Rock Hall and Museum is located at 751 Erieside Drive in downtown Cleveland. The museum is next door to the Science Museum and the city's football stadium and is set on the banks of Lake Erie. If you are staying downtown in the Tower City area then it is an easy walk. There are some meters but if you are driving you should be prepared to pay to use one of the many lots nearby. If it is convenient for you to use the Rapid Public Transit system the Waterfront train line has a stop at the Rock Hall. Admission is $22.00 for adults. There are discounts for seniors and children from age 9-13. Children 8 and under are admitted for free. The museum's website www.rockhall.com has directions and information on their hours of operation. Tickets may be purchased through ticketmaster or at the museum.
This year is especially significant in the history of the Rock Hall. This past winter was the first year the induction ceremony for new members of the hall was held in Cleveland. The world has finally caught on that Cleveland really does rock. If you are able to make the pilgrimage to the Rock Hall of Fame and Museum you can see that for yourself.
