Yes, let's see. There must be a perfect side job for teachers somewhere. Lord knows teachers don't work hard enough during their normal work days. They should rush out after their 7 1/2 hour days and go do some real job somewhere. They should earn their pay like everyone else has to do. Teachers have the easiest job in the world. They hang around a school all day, grade a few papers here and there, mark a few spots in a report card now and again. They have all holidays and summers off. My God! They should be working harder.
There must be something teachers could do, something job related to their pretend job of teaching. How about combat? Yes, perfect. All teachers are somewhat trained in the art of combat. They just don't get combat pay in their contracts. They should because there is plenty of training opportunity involved. How about those teachers in the Special Ed. rooms, particularly in the emotionally disturbed rooms? Oh, yes, there in lies the opportunity for combat pay. Those teachers should be weekend and evening commandos. They are skilled in the art of warfare and maneuvering in enemy territory. They have often been the target of aggressions-both verbal and physical. There are often projectiles flying across the rooms ranging from pencils to desks and chairs.
Teachers could be guidance counselors and/or therapists. They have to figure out their students and adjust attitudes continually in order to begin delivering education to the unwilling masses. It is certainly not a stretch to imagine a teacher spending the evening straightening out someone's mess of a life. They get plenty of practice during the day. If they spend enough time in their assignments, they could turn to themselves for their own needed therapy. It would only require talking to the voices in their heads put there by years of catering to not so balanced students.
Yes, teachers have it easy. Really? Well, if you believe that teachers are overpaid and underworked, think again. We do not get paid nearly enough to deal with the mess inside the heads of many of today's youth. Kids today come with so much mental and emotional baggage, we should get paid as bellhops. If your child can read, is learning to manage anger and is reasonably socially acceptable, thank a teacher. Don't be one of the ignorant that believes that a teacher's job is simple and full of free time.
