When it comes to safety at a skatepark, it is simply portrayed as "a helmet is required." It's true that most skateparks require you to wear a helmet, safety measures must be taken beyond just wearing a helmet. First and foremost always wear your helmet. Most skateboarders see wearing a helmet as uncool, but how cool would it be if you crack your head open? A helmet isn't the only source of protective gear you can wear. You can wear knee pads, elbow pads, etc. These items are more particular for vert skaters to wear, but never hurt for any other type of skateboarder to wear.
Beyond wearing protective gear many safety measures should be considered when your at the skatepark. Most skateparks allow various kinds of activities, not just skateboarding. You have bike riders, in-line skaters, etc. It is important to understand that not everyone at the skatepark is participating in the same activity as you are. This is important to understand because it allows you to understand the paths and directions of the people around you. Skateparks are often crowded and in a crowded place it's considerable to understand the movement of others around you. This helps keep traffic flowing and avoids running into others.
Speaking of movement, a lot of movement takes place at a skatepark. It's important to stay in your own path and stay clear of others. If someone is approaching an obstacle, wait until they are clear of the obstacle before you approach it. Even when you approach an obstacle make sure others know your about to approach it.
With participation at a skatepark always know your ability. Know what you are capable of and never take on something you can't handle. This is one of the most common mistakes skaters make, especially beginners.
When it comes to any action sport it's always considerable to know your limits, but also know participation can lead to injuries. Know mistakes can happen, but to avoid most common mistakes use wise judgement. Skatepark injuries don't always come from participation, but more of confrontation. Sad to say, but true, sometimes confrontation occurs. Respect others around you and hope for the same in return. This isn't always the case, but be wise and walk away.

ADDITIONAL SAFETY TIPS
1) Before participation check to make sure that your skateboard is properly configured. Make sure all hardware is tightened, wheels are bare of embedded objects, etc.
2) MP3 players are ok to bring to the skatepark, but it's advisable to maintain a sound level where you can hear others around you.
3) It's cool to be uncool, as much as you may think wearing your helmet is uncool, it isn't. Keep your helmet on at all times!
