TV show reviews: Legend of the Seeker

The Legend of the Seeker show is based on the Sword of Truth books by Terry Goodkind. Richard Cypher, played by Craig Horner, is the son of a Woodsman and while growing up has no idea he is really the Seeker. The Seeker is a person born in hard times to kill the evil of the time.

The evil that Richard Cypher must kill is named Darken Rahl, played by Craig Parker, has enslaved the three territories. He crushes anyone that does not bow down to him. When Rahl learned of the prophesy of the Seeker who would come to kill him and free the people from his horrible reign, he did everything he could to stop the prophesy from coming true.

Rahl learns that the Seeker will be the first born son in a town called Brenidon and sends his soldiers to kill all the first born sons in that town. A wizard named Zeddicus Zu'l Zorander, played by Bruce Spence, saves Richard from certain death and hides him letting him grow up. Then the Confessor Kahlan Amnell, played by Bridget Regan, comes to find Zeddicus so he can lead her to the Seeker. Confessors are a group of women with special powers to allow them to find justice.

It is at this point in the story of the television series that Richard Cypher is named as the Seeker and Darken Rahl learns that his soldiers failed when they were sent to kill the Seeker. Rahl then does everything he can to kill the Seeker, sending his soldiers, Mord'Sith (group of women that can turn magic back against the user), and followers after them whenever possible.

The series is full of mystical magic and great sword action, as Kahlan and Zeddicus, also called Zedd, help Richard on his quest to destroy Darken Rahl. The first season has been completed and the finale aired over the weekend of May 23rd 2009, but the full episodes can still be watched online at legendoftheseeker.com or in reruns on local television. You can also find local listings for show times on the show's site.

The show also has a little forbidden romance. Richard and Kahlan fall in love with each other but Kahlan's confessor powers would be released and she would be unable to control them if her and Richard were to ever spend a romantic night together.

This show is great for the fantasy lover; wizards, magical objects, sword fights, and evil dragons. It's hard to say if someone not interested in fantasy would be able to get into the show; but I do recommend it to anyone interested in medieval sword fights and forbidden love.
