Sacramento is often overshadowed by its bigger Californian counterparts such as San Francisco and LA. But don't overlook this state capitol with its big city amenities and small town hospitality; Sacramento's summertime offerings can transform anyone's dullest dog days into summer fun.
For some fun family time, look no further than William Land Park in South Sacramento. Pack a picnic lunch and go for a leisurely stroll down the park's shady tree lined paths. Be sure to make a stop at one of the several destinations located in Land Park: Fairy Tale Town, the Sacramento Zoo, or Funderland. Younger children will love the small amusement park style rides at Funderland and playing make-believe in the castle turrets of Fairy Tale Town. The Sacramento Zoo offers entertainment for people of all ages. Though not comparable to big city zoos, but for the size and funding, this historical Sacramento landmark is nothing to scoff at. Even the most jaded old cynics (or teenagers) can't deny the childlike wonder evoked in all of us when a primate does a particularly spectacular impromptu flip or when a snow leopard plays with its cub. The zoo also hosts a number of special events over the summer, such as the Ice Cream Safari and the King of Feasts. Visit saczoo.org for a more detailed calendar of events.
Nothing gets more historically significant in Sacramento than the old towns of Folsom, Fair Oaks, and Sacramento. Visit these attractions for some insight into the region's rich past. Old Sacramento is particularly popular. Enjoy the old-timey atmosphere evoked by the cobblestoned streets, creaky wooden walkways, and 19th century architecture, all the while doing some shopping and soaking up some history. For history junkies, the museums in Old Sac are worth a stop. Old Sacramento is also the site of the major Fourth of July celebration in Sacramento, featuring spectacular fireworks displays and festivities all around. After touring Old Sac, walk on over the nearby Downtown Plaza for some shopping, or the K Street Mall which also houses the iconic Crest Theatre.
Spending time around the Sacramento and American rivers is a quintessential summer activity. The American River Parkway is there for your frolicking, fishing, boating leisure. If you'd prefer to stay dry, there are numerous restaurants that give you the option of dining overlooking the river. Couples should try out the dinner cruise on the "Spirit of Sacramento" riverboat at Old Sac for a romantic summer evening.
