Reasons to pursue a freelance writing career

by Amy Jo Browne

Created on: May 25, 2009

The reasons to pursue a freelance writing career are numerous, but there are drawbacks as well. When one begins a freelance writing career, they may not understand exactly what it entails. Trust me this career path has many twists and turns but it can be rewarding is done for the right reasons.

Independence

Independence is one of the main reasons people choose this career. Independence from a boss, freedom to work on your own schedule are also seems way people turn to this. Not too many people want to be tied to a desk, performing the same routine task day after day when they are not appreciated for their daily task.

Second income

Many people choose freelance writing as a second income while working a full or part-time job elsewhere. This is because this allows the second counts come into the home, without the added expense of having another job.

As a single mom, I got into the freelance writing career because I wanted a second income that I could make from home. My full-time job barely covered the bills, so I wanted this second income for the extras in life. Two years ago, I made the choice to turn this writing career into my only source of income.

Self made schedule

One of the good things about this career field is that you can make your own schedule, which is very important, if you have children at home. As a single mom I know that I need the end, but yeah I also need to have more time to do the school functions and child rearing because I do not have another parent to help me.

This chosen profession allows me to work when I can yet still be able to be a full-time mom, which is always my first job.

Flexibility

Because I have no boss, I can be flexible in the hours that I work. I'm not changed my desk, I don't need to wait for somebody to replace me if I'm working in a nursing field which I used to do. I can just take off in the case of an emergency and not worry about it.

I can also write that novel which would give me personal satisfaction and may make me some money. I can write my novel as I do the other type of freelance writing, as this gives me a change of pace. II just have goals of paid articles that I must write a day, but once I know they are done then I could choose nonfiction writing which is what I truly enjoy.

Glass ceiling

There is no glass ceiling to hit and never rise from. I can choose my income for the most part. I can choose to write for online venues, which are lower paying, where I can choose to write articles for prints publications, which are higher paying. I write for the online markets, for the monthly bills first, and then tried this week in a few extra of different publication articles for the extra income.
