Guild Wars: Prophecies is full of quests, and a lot of them, but without those quests you cant really get very far, yes you can level by going out into say, regent valley and killing mobs but as you said that does take awhile. The feature I like the most about Guild Wars is that you can play on your own server, no one with you save your group and your pet or allies. There are expansion packs to the game, such as Guild Wars: Factions and the latest one Guild Wars: Nightfall.
In Prophecies you have about 5 or so character builds, i.e. Ranger, Warrior, Mesmer, Elementalist, Necromancer, and Monk. Prophecies has two stages, Pre-Searing and Post-Searing. It is a good idea to get as much money and crafting materials like scales, tanned leather squares, iron ingots and bolts of cloth, as you can. A person can get crafting materials simply by breaking items like skale fins down. In Post you can craft your armor the highest I have seen is 60-70.
With this game you can go two ways: Player Versus Player or Role Play. In Player versus Player, you start out at level 20 in the training arena. In the RP you start out in Ascalon City and talk to Named Non Player Characters to receive quests and rewards. In Pre-Searing skills come from quests so the more quests you have the more skills you pick up. In Post what skills you didn't get in Pre can be purchased at the Skill Trainer.
In towns and outposts hench men are available, you can choose from a healer, a warrior, a ranger, a mesmer, or an elementalist. As you get farther away from Post Ascalon the henchmen get stronger which is good since the mobs get stronger as well.
The best way to play this game is to hoard money because armor upgrades and new weapons do not come cheap. Still, this game is fun and a challenge esp. when you are fighting level 24 mobs with only 2 henchmen and you are level 16.
