What you need to know about gastric bypass surgery

In North American society, obesity is becoming an increasingly common health ailment among people young and old alike. Diets, exercise programs, pills and other medications are all used to help people shed unwanted pounds, but for some people its simply not possible. For some people, their obesity has immobilized them to a point where they simply are unable to partake in a normal weight loss routine. In these cases, surgical weight loss procedures such as gastric bypass surgery are nothing short of a miracle.


First, anyone who might think gastric bypass surgery is something to consider, you should know the requirements of candidacy. Not just anyone with a few extra pounds will be considered for this surgery, and there are stringent laws in place to ensure the medical requirements of candidates are met.


Any candidate for gastric bypass procedures must have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher. Generally, people with this level of BMI have many weight-related ailments and illnesses. Many are unable to move without severe pain and discomfort. Any potential patient must have a clean bill of psychological health, and no on-going issues with drugs or alcohol. They cannot be on any medication treating depression or psychiatric disorders. Gastric bypass patients must have suffered with obesity for at least the last five consecutive years, and must be between the ages of 18 and 65. These are the laws set in place for practice in the United States.


If you meet the requirements above, and you're sure you've exhausted all other measure of weight loss, perhaps it is time think about surgical weight loss. There are several surgeries available, such as The Lap Band or The Gastric Balloon. Gastric Bypass has shown to be most effective. Be sure to discuss your options with your physician before beginning any weight loss plan.


The most common gastric bypass surgery that is performed in North America is Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. This surgery can be performed through a large abdominal incision, or through laparoscopic surgery using small tools and a camera as a guide. Regardless of the method in which entry is made, the tasks executed remain the same in order to achieve the same end result.


Using either surgical staples or a plastic band, a large portion of the stomach is sealed off. The small intestine is altered so that the upper intestine is no longer used and ingested substances pass directly from the smaller stomach into the middle part of the small intestine.
