The benefits of antioxidants

Created on: May 23, 2009

Every day, there are free radicals that get inside our bodies from the environment, the things we use and even some of the food we eat. These elements are actually toxins that are quite harmful to health. They transform healthy molecules into more free radicals. As a result, a chain reaction called oxidative stress is initiated which can end up damaging more molecules.

In simple words, the oxidative process that has been set in motion by free radicals causes the death of otherwise healthy body tissues. As such, this is believed to be responsible for premature aging, formation of skin wrinkles and discoloration, development of arthritis and stiffening of the joints, hardening of the arteries, reduction of metabolic rate and lots of other negative conditions.

PROTECTION

Reverse the destructive effects of free radicals in your body. Avail of the many benefits antioxidants have to offer. These are dietary substances that include nutrients like vitamins C and E, beta carotene and selenium. Antioxidants help prevent further damage to cells and repair damages that free radicals have done.

Antioxidants are actually produced naturally in our bodies. However, they decrease as we get older. Thus, the need to acquire them from the foods we include in our diet. Nutritionists say that eating plenty of fruits and vegetables, whole grains and nuts daily can already supply the antioxidants the body needs.

One big advantage to having a sufficient amount of antioxidants in the body is its significant effect in slowing down or preventing the oxidative process caused by free radicals. Think of a slice of apple that turns brown when you leave it exposed to air but stays in its natural color if you soak it in lemon juice.

SPECIFIC BENEFITS

Antioxidants stop the oxidation process by neutralizing free radicals. But in so doing, the antioxidants become oxidized themselves. That is why there is a need to continuously replenish our antioxidant intake.

Some of the most significant advantages antioxidants provide include:

1) Defense against heart disease

2) Strengthening of arteries and veins

3) Reduction of blood pressure

4) Protection from arthritis inflammation and relief from pain

5) Relief from pulmonary conditions like asthma and bronchitis

6) Assistance in sports injury healing

7) Decrease in allergy episodes

8) Risk reduction of cancer, stroke, and other vascular diseases

9) Enhancement of immune resistance

10) Slowing degeneration of the brain and eyes

RECOMMENDATIONS

To reiterate, each time it neutralizes a free radical, the antioxidant stops functioning as an antioxidant. That is why we must ensure that our diets include a constant supply of antioxidants that are rich and diverse. Eat a wide variety of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, lean meats and dairy products every day.

Of course, aside from eating antioxidant-rich foods, you also have to live a healthy lifestyle. Exercise regularly, stop smoking and avoid being stressed most of the time. As always, it is essential that you ask a trusted medical practitioner for further advice.
