Favre's behavior has been an embarrassment to his legacy. Let's examine what Favre did coming down the stretch concerning his performance on the field; an 81 quarterback rating, losing 4 of the last 5 games costing the Jets the division championship, his 2 Touchdowns vs. 9 Interceptions in those last five games. Then of course there was that final game in the Meadowlands where the person the Jets traded away to make room for Favre, Chad Pennington came back to visit New York and defeated Favre with the title on the line. Favre humiliated himself during the 2008 season with a dismal performance as quarterback for the New York Jets. Favre's antics prior to his signing with the Jets, the tearful March farewell followed several months later in July his decision that he wanted to continue playing has resulted in him losing respect of many of his former fans.
Favre's creation of a media circus has really caused many of his fans to sour on him. Sadly Favre is just one more example of a former great athlete who simply doesn't know when to call it quits. Once again it appears that Favre will make the same mistake he made last year with the Jets only this time it will be with the Vikings.
No doubt a GM like Rick Spielman of the Vikings will attempt to get Favre in a Viking uniform next September. Spielman has a history of trying to implement quick fixes. His tenure with the Dolphins as Director of Player Personnel and General Manager resulted in a parade of quarterback failures purchased at the price of future draft picks. Lucas, Culpepper and Harrington were names whose legacy's as Dolphins were brief.
What must be frustrating to Favre is that his replacement in Green Bay Aaron Rodgers performed brilliantly in his first year at the helm of the Packers. Throwing for over 4000 yards 28 touchdowns and only 13 interceptions Rodgers quarterback rating of 95 was one of the highest in the league. While the Packers limped to a 6-10 season the blame for that poor performance was clearly a weak Packer front seven. With the addition this year of BJ Raji at tackle and Clay Matthews at one of the outside linebacker spots the Packers will be a force to be reckoned with in the NFC.
Favre is currently debating whether to have surgery on his torn bicep tendon. Perhaps a better decision for Favre would be to go back to riding his tractor in MIssissippi and continue his successful career doing jeans commercials.
