Video game reviews: Mega Man 2 (NES)

by David Park

Created on: May 22, 2009

Mega Man 2, also known as Rockman 2: The Mystery of Dr. Wily, follows the story of a little blue robot built by Dr. Light as he fights against the eight evil Robot Masters who were built by Dr. Wily. This 2-d action platformer made by Capcom may not have been overly popular when first sold, but it is now widely known as one of the best out of all the Mega Man games.

Graphics:

Well, this is one of the original NES games. Released in 1989 in North America and Japan, and 1990 in Europe, this game is two-dimensional, but it's also full of mini-explosions, different weapons all with different graphics, and many different enemy (and character) sprites. This game excels in its use of graphics.

Sound:

The soundtrack in this game is catchy and fun. The same trio who developed the original Mega Man soundtrack came back to do the second. The Dr. Wily Theme (which plays when you are in the last levels) is addictive to listen to and has been remixed and recorded many times by different fans. Also, the sound effects are well done and fit with the game.

Story:

Well, since this is an action-platformer, this game doesn't have much in the ways of story. But it certainly does have a huge fun factor. Unlike it's predecessor, Mega Man 2 has a password system that allows one to continue where you left off, saving which bosses you've defeated and how many energy tanks you have. What are energy tanks? Another new addition, these special items allow you to restore yourself to full health at the press of a couple buttons whenever you want! Needless to say, these are ridiculously useful.

Similar to other Mega Man games, when one defeats one of the evil Robot Master bosses, you gain a special ability of theirs to call your own. Also, you have to get through Dr. Wily's fortress at the end, which is essentially a teleport room which takes you to each of the bosses you've already beaten one at a time. This makes the game less linear without taking out the fun.

4.5 / 5

Overall:

7 / 5!

Yes, I know my logic makes no sense. But still, this game is amazing. It was voted as number 33 in the "Top 200 Nintendo Games Ever" in 2006. If you want to play this but don't have a Nintendo, there are various emulators out there on the web on which you can play this for free. You can't call yourself a Mega Man fan unless you've played this game. It is truly the epitome of Nintendo awesomeness.
