Tips for first-time and infrequent travelers

So you are off on your long-awaited holiday. You have packed well, you have your carry-on packed with your makeup, camera, your laptop, a toothbrush, a book and something to keep you warm just in case. I'd suggest that your carry-on has wheels because lugging heavy bags anywhere will slow you down. Keep your necessary stuff to a minimum but keep your valuables with you. If you are flying internationally you may not be aware that you can have TWO suitcases, but you will be aware of sizes and weights. I like to pack a lightweight second suitcase inside of my primary suitcase if I am going somewhere to shop. And be prepared to leave some stuff behind in a Vinnie bin when you can't bring it all back home with you.

ASK before taking pictures. Be gracious and maintain your integrity. You are representing yourself and you need to be your best.

Plan ahead. Book hotels early. TripAdvisor.com is sensational for good feedback. Lonely Planet books will direct you to places that you didn't even know existed. Travel with a scant itinerary and be open to change. I met a man in a quick elevator ride who suggested a place that wasn't on any of the popular travel sites. It has become my favourite place of all-times. Talk to locals, listen to what they say. Never believe that you are better than they are.

Traveling is one huge breath of fresh air. Be smart, listen to your instincts and trust in humanity. I've been in the stickiest of situations and have always come out safe and
