Ban on cell phone while driving has become a law in California. With the passing of this law, the majority of the drivers in the state are using their phones with a hands free device.
That is good right? Well some driver's idea of a hands free device is not putting the phone up to their ear. What the driver does is hold the phone in their hand and talk on it, now the cell phone is in front of them, not sure if this is any better.
Then there is the driver that has the phone up to their ear, and is driving very slow on the freeway, and I mean slow. Not even close to posted speed limit maybe 20 miles below, which for the most part in the state that is really 30 below. You see the posted speed limit is just a suggestion to most drivers.
Now back to the hands free devices some are more hands free then others. The integrated systems in cars that allow voice training and can be used without touching them is a true hands free. Then there are the Blue tooth devices that hang on your ear or visor, using this choice the cell phone will have to be touched to answer the incoming call. The last hands free option is the ancient device that is a wired ear piece, to answer any phone calls with this type the phone will have to also be touched.
The best thing about the ban on cell phone while driving is that is one less thing that drivers are doing when they are driving. Now they can drive with a cigarette and coffee without adding in the cell too.
The cell phone is not the only means of distraction for drivers. Some drivers will be eating while driving, that paper wrapped around the burger that they are eating is in their eyes. The dog that is in their lap is hanging out the window and the driver is trying to get them back in the car. The list of possibility can go on and on.
We have become a society of multitasking that when we are driving to work, home, or trip we must do everything at once. What happened to driving and taking in all the sites around you? Try this the next time you are in a car, turn off the phone; turn up the radio and just drive. Really look at what is around you, become aware of your surroundings. I believe that you will see something that has changed or a place that you did not know was there.
Yes I know that cell phones have made things easier for us to call someone, without looking for a phone booth. Cell phone can be a big distraction when you are driving even if you have the hands free device on and both hands on the wheel. Remember to drive safe when using them and enjoy your drive.
