Heated arguments across the blogosphere have erupted concerning Michael Vick's future in the NFL . Prompted by his release from prison May 20th, Vick's supporters and detractors have filled the internet with opinions both pro and con as to his suitability to be considered for reinstatement by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.
It appears that Vick's strategists have taken a smart approach to navigating the tricky waters to Vick resuming his career in professional football. With Vick still due to serve the next two months under house arrest, they have delayed pursuing any immediate action to seek reinstatement and instead appear to be focused more on the current task at hand, that being to rehabilitate his professional and personal image shattered by the former star's animal cruelty and dog fighting conviction.
These same strategists appear to have also avoided the dangerous pitfalls that could be encountered had they decided to align themselves with PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, an organization whose members are unlikely to forgive Vick no matter what the former NFL quarterback would do to try to make amends for his prior actions. Past attempts by Vick's representatives to reach an agreement with PETA fell apart when the animal rights organization demanded that Vick undergo a questionable brain scan to determine whether he was a psychopathic animal abuser.
While Vick's actions are viewed by the public at large as being reprehensible, PETA radical vegetarian agenda and viewpoints are extremely disliked by the general public. Any attempt by Vick to link himself to an association with PETA could easily backfire on the former star and be viewed by the public as being a phony attempt at rehabilitation. In addition Vick's supporters could easily turn on Vick as they would view such an association negatively.
Vick's strategy instead will focus on a campaign associated with the much more mainstream ASPCA, American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. This more common sense approach will have Vick featured as a spokesperson addressing the dog fighting issue directly featuring a boots on the ground approach. This campaign will have Vick going directly into communities where dog fighting is part of the culture to speak out against this practice.
The disgraced former quarterback has also aligned himself and found the support of former NFL coach Tony Dungy. Dungy the first African American coach to win a Super Bowl is highly loved
