Synbiotics. This is what scientists call it when probiotics and prebiotics are taken together. Prebiotics are said to support the growth of probiotics and both work in a synergistic way to enhance the probiotics' benefits.
To make it easier to identify which one is which, here are their definitions:
Prebiotics are components found naturally in many foods. They can also be isolated from plants or synthesized. According to the International Food Information Council, in order for a food ingredient to be classified as a prebiotic, there must be proof that it:
(1) is not broken down in the stomach or absorbed in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract,
(2) is fermented by the GI microflora, and
(3) selectively stimulates the growth or activity of intestinal bacteria that are associated with health and wellbeing.
On the contrary, probiotic microorganisms can be found as ingredients in foods and beverages as well as in supplement form. Some yogurts and other cultured dairy products are supplemented with these helpful bacteria, particularly specific strains of Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli.
THEIR ROLES
Humans serve as host to a lot of types of microorganisms. The GI environment, including the microflora, plays a significant role in health. To better understand what roles prebiotics and probiotics play in overall wellbeing, you have to be familiar with the relationship between the GI tract and the body.
Simply put, the gut microflora contains both potentially helpful as well as potentially harmful bacteria. So it is important to maintain a healthy intestinal tract for the intestine to act as an effective barrier. It should allow nutrients to be absorbed but should also be able to keep toxins out such as foreign bacteria or viruses.
The primary characteristic and effect of prebiotics in the diet is to promote the growth and production of good bacteria in the intestinal tract. Basically, they serve as food for beneficial bacteria. As a result, they boost the effects of probiotics.
Alternatively, eating foods with probiotics helps balance out the microflora which results to increasing the number of the beneficial bacteria and preventing the growth of the harmful ones in the intestine. Moreover, probiotics can also adjust the gut immune response and improve its barrier function.
Aside from restoring the natural balance of healthy bacteria, other health benefits of probiotics include,
(1) support or stimulation of the immune system,
(2) minimized risks of stomach and gut infections,
(3) prevention of stomach ailments like ulcers
There are now milk products for children that contain prebiotics. These help kids maintain a healthy digestive system by reducing the negative effects of harmful bacteria. Prebiotics also help improve a child's bowel functions by preventing constipation and regulating stool quality. When parents give their children milk containing prebiotics, they are essentially helping support the overall growth and development of these kids.
Finally, prebiotics and probiotics are recognized to have an impact on the body’s microflora balance. These components help improve gut function and boost the body's immune system. And while the benefits of prebiotics and probiotics may vary depending on the type and amount we take, it is highly recommended that we eat and drink foods that contain these beneficial elements every day.
