To be a writer is to live the dream, but that dream should not be confined to the idea of becoming a best selling author. The main reason for not taking up writing as a career is often through lack of understanding. To become a professional writer does not have to involve fiction, nor does it require you to write books.
To pursue a career as a writer a basic standard of literacy is essential. Grammar, punctuation and spelling can always be corrected during editing, but misuse of words, and a limited vocabulary, are definite drawbacks.
Journalists, scriptwriters, screenwriters, and other full time professional writers, may require some practical training to gain inside knowledge and understanding of the media.
Be prepared to take a professional training course, attend writing classes, or read textbooks and manuals. Acquire new writing skills. Learn more about how to gain employment, or acceptance, as a professional writer.
To be a successful writer means writing for other people, not writing for yourself. In addition to creative talent, and an urge to write, you need particular skills, specialist knowledge and a good understanding of the writing process. These will allow you to find writing jobs and become a paid writer.
Work as a Creative Writer
If you decide to be a novelist, a screenwriter, or a scriptwriter, it is essential to have more than a passion for words and an active imagination. Reading contemporary novels or scripts should help you understand the need for constructing a good plot, writing realistic dialogue, and creating convincing characters.
Following current trends is important for a successful career as a creative writer. There is no point in producing well written work that will never be published or performed, only because there is no demand for it.
Work as a Freelance Writer
To be a good freelance writer you should be confident in your abilities, be adaptable and able to follow guidelines closely. Be prepared to write clear and concise articles on any set topic. Agree on a deadline for completing the work, and stick to it. Extensive research may also be required for a freelance job.
For some freelancing jobs you will need to know how to present your writing in the correct format, and know how to write effective web content. Experience is not always important, but you may be required to show prospective clients samples of your writing, or a portfolio of completed work.
Find the Right Opportunity
There are numerous opportunities to be a writer. A copywriter can be asked to provide information to be printed on packaging, technical instructions for a manual, a travel guide, or a promotional leaflet. Using personal knowledge and experience to find little known opportunities to write can lead to unusual sources of writing income.
Deciding to be a writer is just the start of doing what many people consider to be a dream job. All that is really necessary to be a writer is the ability to produce the best text for a specific purpose.
