Quitting a job is something that should never be taken lightly. While there are probably people that quit jobs every day, there is still some thought that should be employed before making that final decision. After all, leaving a job can have major ramifications on one's life. People should do everything in their power to make sure that they understand what might occur if they walk away from their current employment situation. Here are few thoughts on questions that should be asked before quitting one's day job.
Another job?
A person should ask themselves what the plan is after they walk away. In other words, do they have another job lined up? Do they have prospects on another field of work? When the economy is doing relatively well, people may feel like they can leave a job and get a new one relatively easily. Of course, even when there are jobs available, it may take some time to go through the process of applying, interviewing, and starting a new position. Therefore, a new job may or may not appear in a timely fashion.
Factors
There are other things that people have to consider before walking away. Money is often a factor for people, as they have obligations such as mortgages, car loans, child costs, and general household expenses. If someone walks away from a job, do they have the financial resources to sustain an extended period of unemployment? In addition, there is the issue of health care, which is major concern for many people. Despite the fact that many organizations allow employees to extend their health insurance for a few months if the employee picks up the cost, there is an end date to that benefit. Depending on medical situations, this may be a major issue.
Emotion
The person who is contemplating a departure should ask themselves if they are making an emotional decision. To be sure, emotion is a part of every decision and individuals cannot simply separate their emotion from their thought process. However, there are times when people are feeling more emotionally heightened. In a job situation, this usually manifests itself as anger and frustration. When people get upset, they may feel compelled to make a snap judgment. Depending on the situation, this may result in something that the person later regrets. Therefore, a period of self-assessment may be prudent before making a particular decision.
Perspective
Finally, it may be helpful for someone to evaluate whether they have received any advice. Certainly other people do not know exactly what the person is going through. However, sometimes people can provide a particular type of perspective that the individual cannot clearly see. In those cases there may be wisdom in asking for a bit of analysis from a family member or close friend. Overall, the goal of questioning is to make sure that one understands the ramifications of their decision. There may always be unanswered questions, but at least people have spent some time pondering what comes next.
