Although the idea of trying makeup for the first time might be fun, it can also be a daunting prospect when faced with a vast array of cosmetics. Knowing which items to use and where to begin tends to be the question on the lips of most first timers.
Basics
Items which I would recommend a beginner to use while learning the basics of application, are a translucent foundation with light reflecting pigments, translucent powder, a natural colored powder blusher, lip gloss to match, two shades of one color of eyeshadow, a brown eyeliner and black/brown mascara.
A large, soft blusher brush, makeup sponge and an eyeshadow applicator will be necessary, although you may find that your actual makeup comes with one or more of these items enclosed, so check the contents of your makeup purchases before proceeding to buy more.
Begin with a clean face. Although one of the first cosmetics that many people apply to their faces is referred to as foundation, your real foundation is your actual skin. By keeping your skin clean, and as healthy as possible you will provide a good base on which to begin applying makeup.
Next apply foundation. Squeeze a coin sized amount onto the back of the hand you won't be using to apply your makeup. Then take up a small amount of the foundation onto your fingertips and begin to dot it onto your cheeks, nose and chin. With your sponge, which can be dampened, quickly blend the foundation with sweeping movements across your face.
Try not to drag the skin, and be sure to blend the foundation well so that there isn't a visible line showing resembling a mask. You can check that your application is smooth and well blended by looking at your face with a mirror in natural light, from all angles.
Next apply face powder. You can experiment by trying the powder puff which should accompany the powder in it's container, and with using your large blusher brush, to see which method of application you prefer. Whichever you use, be careful not to overload your brush. A little makeup at a time is the key to a successful finish. You can always add more, but taking excess away is more difficult.
When it comes to applying blusher you can see exactly where to place it by sucking in your cheeks and pouting. Where the hollows are formed in your cheeks is the correct place to begin. However, try to use a circular motion rather than using bold sweeping streaks of blusher, unless you are aiming to appear as a rebellious punk.
