Summer beauty: Overcoming body image issues

Body Issues. We've all had them, especially during the summer where outfits reveal more skin. It goes without saying that summer is probably the time of year that most of us dread since it's the time to show off some skin. God knows how many beach invitations I've turned down because I felt I wasn't hot enough to join the crowd. We've all been told at one point that we should love our body or to love ourselves but well, that is always easier said than done. So how do we overcome body image issues?

To have a positive self image or body image, we have to learn to accept the way we are. We have to learn to accept that we may not be a size 2 or 4 like other people and probably never will be unless we starve ourselves for at least a week. We have to learn to accept that our left ear may be bigger than the right and all sorts of imperfections that we see in ourselves. Let's face it, not all of us have perfect, symmetrical, cellulite-free bodies with flawless skin like people in magazines and on TV. Its even worse nowadays that there are many different technologies and computer programs to manipulate pictures in enhancing the beauty of the models. Cellulite suddenly disappears, blemishes removed by a few clicks of a mouse and voila, perfection! If only it were that easy for us to "fix" what we think is wrong with ourselves. I'm sure we all had the "I wish I was just like him or her" moment in our lives. The media has a great impact on the way we perceive ourselves but we shouldn't let the media dictate the definition of beauty.

Having a negative self image can cause a number of health problems. It can lead to emotional distress, anxiety, depression, low self-esteem and diets can sometimes lead to eating disorders. To sum it up, it makes you unhappy. So, how do you develop a positive self image?

First and foremost, you have to learn to love yourself. We are our own harshest critics. Stop comparing yourself to others because we are all born different. We come in all shapes and sizes but that doesn't make you less worthy to be called "beautiful". Ignore the influences of the media. Models do not represent the image or size of the general public. They represent what they are paid to represent. Start appreciating yourself. I don't mean that you go overboard and spend hours in front of the mirror telling yourself how beautiful you are. Learn to accept yourself as you are. There is no such thing as perfect. You may think you have flabby arms and a turkey neck but some
