Christopher Moore has been writing to keep audiences laughing for years with novels like Fluke, Melancholy Lust Lizards, You Suck, Blood Sucking Fiends, A Dirty Job, Fool and best of all; Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff Christ's Childhood Pal. This novel takes us through the years between Jesus's birth and his death - in a very un-biblical context. The reader gets to see Jesus Christ in a way that Anne Rice tried to write about and fail; his adolescent and teenage years. The novels keeps the reader on the edge of their seat throughout its entirety while making them split a gut with every page turn.
The plot is simple, yet complicated, an angel comes down to modern age earth and awakens Biff, Christ's best friend and disciple that was never written about because of the way he died. The angel tells Biff that it is time for his story to be heard; and thus the saga unfolds as Biff writes his very own Gospel from a hotel room in modern day Mexico; with an angel who wants to trade in his wings for web-slinging Spider-man abilities.
The novel follows Christ through his discovery of becoming the Christ and has him travel the world trying to find the Magi who visited him upon his birth, with Biff of course. Along the way he learns how to become the man he is and to live a life worth living; meanwhile living vicariously through Biff; who would have sex with prostitutes and tell him what sex was like; or eat bacon and tell him what pig tasted like; etc.
The story - while fairly blasphemous to those of the Christian faith; is hysterical and I believe should cause no one offense as it is only intended in fun. It takes the strictness out of Christianity and places a more; live your life with love kind of mantra. The main theme that comes out of the novel is that of: live your life so that others may see good in you. Don't hate others for lifestyle choices; don't be legalistic - just love your neighbour and be a good person.
And there is a great re-writing of the Sermon on the Mount which includes: Blessed are the f-tards. It's a definite riot. Go out and pick up Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal by Christopher Moore today! And once you do you won't regret it. My girlfriend bought me this book for Christmas one year; and I loved it. I make everyone I know read it; including my pastor. I've also managed to fall in love with Christopher Moore's other novels as well. This book is a solid five stars out of five!
