Why we need breakfast

In an age where everyone is busy and rushing around in the morning to start their days many will skip breakfast in preference for a few more minutes of blissful sleep. Many diet gurus out there are extolling the virtues of breakfast as people who eat breakfast are normally slimmer then those who don't.

The theory is that by not eating breakfast you are at a high risk of eating higher calorie food at some point during the day because you are ravished. When you eat breakfast your metabolism will get a boost and by lunch time you will be ready to eat again but in moderation. By not eating breakfast you will feel hungry by ten to eleven o'clock in the morning and will probably chow down on what ever you can lay your hands on, such as cookies, biscuits or doughnuts which are all empty carbs and fattening and also easier to eat at your desk.

By eating a healthy breakfast in the morning it can help to give you better concentration, you suffer less depression, won't feel as tired, have fewer illnesses and you won't get caught out in a morning meeting with a growling stomach.

In order for our bodies to metabolize fat, we need to eat. By not eating we won't burn fat and it will be stored in the body for future use. This is our body's survival mode which probably dates back to when we had to hunt for our food and didn't know when the next meal was coming. Also eating breakfast and smaller meals during the day will help to keep our blood sugar levels balanced.

A good healthy breakfast can consist of fruit, yoghurt, and fortified milk with cereal, oatmeal, bran, or eggs. A good breakfast will provide your body with much needed nutrients such as iron, iodine and calcium to keep you going until lunch. Of all the meals you eat during the day you can make breakfast the largest and other meals should be eaten in moderation. For those of you who are dieting or want to maintain your weight eating breakfast is crucial, but make sure your breakfast is not filled with sugar laden foods.

There are those out there who do not think breakfast is important that in order to increase our metabolic rate all we need to do is drink water and exercise. Which is probably true, anything you ingest will increase your metabolic rate but most people do not have time to exercise in the morning. Problem is with this thinking you are still going to be hungry in the later part of the morning. You will look for something to eat which will probably be empty carbs then still go out to lunch later and this will lead to gaining weight. And by sticking to a schedule you are less likely to suffer from digestive problems.

Breakfast is important, so instead of getting an extra twenty minutes of sleep, get up and make yourself a good healthy breakfast.
