Things to avoid doing when visiting your child's school

In today's society, everyone wants to be as deeply involved as possible in their child's educational development but sometimes, without thinking, social blunders or parental mistakes can be made while visiting your child's school.

First, consider your clothing.

You may not think it, but sometimes what you wear to school could be just as bad as what your child wants to wear. I once found myself turned away at the front door of my daughter's school for wearing a t-shirt that had a liquor company's logo on its front. Personally, I didn't think it would be an issue, but unfortunately the school's principal did. If there is a dress code at your child's school, do you think it's appropriate for you to visit the school wearing something that violates that code?

Second, consider what you bring to school.

Each school has restrictions of certain items that can be brought into it.. Things that can be used as weapons like knives and guns are strictly prohibited on school grounds. Even what you might consider a pocket knife or a box cutter is illegal to bring on campus. If you have one, leave it in your vehicle when you arrive, that way it's out of sight and out of mind. Electronic devices like MP3 Players, PDA's, and Cell Phones can be noisy and cause a distraction to children during class and should be muted or turned off until you leave.

Third, consider what you say.

The joke you tell your buddy at your favorite bar is definitely not going to be something you tell your child's teacher while in a classroom full of 2nd graders within earshot. Remember to use only age appropriate language when talking at your child's school.

Finally, consider how you act.

You pay that teacher with your taxes and while your child is in their classroom, he or she needs to be following the teachers instructions not yours. Don't reprimand or discipline your child while the teacher is present or you run the risk of undermining that teacher's authority. You also need to avoid arguing or countermanding a teacher in front of your child or other children who might be present. When you have issues with your child's teacher, ask the teacher to speak with you in private or take your issues up with the principal.

Just remember, you are the pattern your child seeks guidance from, so let your actions guide your way and your child will follow in your footsteps.
