How to demonstrate respect at work

Created on: May 21, 2009

So you want to know how to demonstrate respect at work? Well there are several ways that you can do this, and if you can master these few things, you can have a great relationship with people at work. It seems that sometimes respecting people at work can be a lost art, and there is something to be said for respecting people at work. So what are some of the things that you can do to respect people while you are work?

Always be there to listen to people. Listening demonstrates that you are willing to be there when people have an issue, or need to communicate. If you can listen effectively, you encourage people to talk to you, and communication is key to business. You become more of a trusted figure at work, and people can turn to you when things go wrong, or if something urgent needs to be discussed. It helps not only the people around you, but you as well.

When you are at work, make sure you realize that you aren't the only one there. Don't take time to make personal calls during work, and don't do anything that would annoy people. Don't listen to your music too loud, and don't go on and on about your personal life. While people might be able to listen to you for a little while, they are more concerned with getting the work done. Making yourself the center of the workplace won't work, unless you have a lot to offer in return for people listening to your stories.

Always be on time! This says that you care about your job, and that you aren't going to make other people wait around for you. If you can demonstrate your willingness to show up on time, it demonstrates respect, and helps people trust you. If you are always coming in late, or calling in sick, you tell people that you will show up when you are ready, and don't really care about others. This is a great way to make or break relationships at work, and is the ultimate show of respect if you can show up on time.

Do your work correctly, and do it well. If you can do a good job, it shows that you respect the job, and others around you. Nobody has to correct your mistakes on a constant basis, and they will like you more too. It all goes back to people trusting you, and relying on you more if you can respect them. If you can do your job, it makes life easier for others, and they will work harder to make sure they are doing a good job too.

Respect at work is a two way street. If you want respect, you have to demonstrate respect. Be on time, do a good job, and always be available to hear others out. Don't be a leech, and don't distract others from doing their jobs. If you can remember these few things, you will always have a job, and people will respect you more for it.
