The idea of striking first has always been a taboo subject for the traditional and true martial artist in general. Ethically it is perceived as instigating a fight, which is against the true Martial Way. Most martial arts system's code of ethics speak against it, stating that one is not to use his or her martial skill until first struck upon. But sometimes it is a necessary evil to take the initiative-especially when you or a loved one's life maybe at stake.
In all reality, the object of martial training is to survive anything you come by. So when should you strike first? Well, it depends on the situation, you, and your gut feeling.
If you actually spot someone near you reaching for a weapon, and you know it is a weapon they are reaching for, then by all means you should react immediately. This will both end the conflict and save a lot of violence-especially on your part, as you were probably the target.
If someone is being unreasonable and aggressive, they are probably going to attack. If you can't talk them down and make them quit in a few seconds-and if they will not get out of your face, it is probably best that you retain them. Using a limb lock would be best, but sometimes you have to knock them out in order to get away or get help.
Sometimes it is necessary to strike first when you suspect that someone is about to hurt you. If they keep trying to get you to follow them, or keep harassing you to do something, this is a good indicator. If they start to grab you and pull you towards where they want you to go, action is both necessary and justified.
If you are approached aggressively and cornered by more than one person, immediately action is justified. By cornering you, they are telling you they intend to hurt you, and even if they don't, you still have the right to defend yourself. Strike first, get through them, and get away!
Striking first is really all about your gut feeling and the situation. If you feel that if you sit quietly any longer that they will hurt you, then so be it. The person should not have been in your face in the first place. We're all civilized people, so we should reflect that by talking our problems out. By attacking you verbally and making threatening advances, your opponent has technically made the first strike. Therefore it is up to you to counter by intercepting his soon-to-come strike, or to wait for it.
