Alive
Today, I was planted, and what a rush it was! I felt myself falling all of a sudden, and then, I landed with a crash in the ground, with some of the others. It was amazing, but quite honestly, a little scary. Then it got wet, and I heard the Big Voice say something. I think it said that soon, we would all be big and tall, and we would feed people all over the world. What a heavy burden to carry!
Yesterday, I poked my head out of the ground, and the fresh air was great! I felt the sun for the first time, and I just had to stretch out and soak it all in. It sure was a good idea, because today it's raining nonstop. I'm worried the ground is going to get too wet and wash me away, but everyone else seems to be holding in tightly enough, so maybe I'm just worrying too much.
But that's not the important part! Today, the Big Voice came by, and there was a Little Voice with him. They almost sound the same, but the Little Voice is just so much smaller.
"And what's over here, Pa?" the Little Voice said.
"That's where I put the wheat, son," Big Voice said. Suddenly, they were thundering over me. "This section right here, away from the rest, is for our bread. I planted the best seeds here, and they'll grow up to be the best wheat of this year's harvest."
I couldn't help but wonder if I had heard that correctly. Me, the best? That's so exciting, but it's an overwhelming thing to think about. How much of us are here? I knew that I wasn't alone, but I never knew there could be so many. Could I really be part of the best? I can't stop thinking of it, even now, as the rain tumbles on and around me. The best...
It seems like I went to sleep for a while, and woke up really tall! The ground seems so far away, and when I peek down when a wind comes through, I get scared. What if I fell from this height?
Big Voice came back today. It seemed really happy, pleased. I could feel excitement radiating from it, overpowering the sun's rays.
"Look at how tall you all are getting!" Big Voice exclaimed. "Seems like just the other day, you were tiny, little seedlings! Soon, it'll be harvesting time."
It was like it knew exactly how I felt.
Today, the wind came through. I danced with it for a little while, although I'm a horrible dancer. I really love when the wind comes to visit; it always plays with me for a while, and it's a lot of fun. But it doesn't stay long. It has other things to do, so it runs off after a few moments. The wind is my only playmate, so I can't help but miss it when it
