I am sitting on the white sandy beach in St. Croix relaxing in the sun. The air is warm and the sun is intense. I can hear the ocean waves crashing on the shore. It's so peaceful and tranquil. I am squishing the sand between my toes and thinking that I could stay here forever. This is all interrupted when I hear a siren blaring - what's going on? All of a sudden, I sit straight up in bed in a panic. It was my alarm clock blaring next to me on the nightstand. Oh my gosh! It was a freaking dream! A little disoriented, I am looking around my bedroom wondering how I got here. Then it dawns on me that I am late for work. Damn!
As I rush around trying to get ready, I turn on the TV to see what the forecast is. It reads as follows, "Sunday, clear and sunny, high of 77." Sunday? What? It's Sunday? Not believing what the TV is telling me, I look at my cell phone - the date is Sunday, October 22nd 2007. I am almost convinced - need to check one more resource. I open the front door and there is my Sunday paper on the steps before me. Whew! What an ordeal and what a relief!
I decided to head out and get some coffee at Starbucks. In the center of town there is a pretty good sized lake where something is always going on. People come here to feed the ducks, take a leisurely stroll, fish, take out a canoe, etc. I thought this would be a terrific place for my observation.
The temperature is unseasonably warm for October today. The sun feels warm on my cheeks and there is a slight breeze blowing. Despite my realization that I was not on a beach in St. Croix, it wasn't a terrible alternative. This lake has always been a favorite spot of mine. It's a great spot to sit and people watch too which in my opinion is highly entertaining.
I strolled along the grey stone gravel path that guides one around the lake and decided to take up residence on a wooden park bench beside the lake. As I sipped on my Pumpkin Spice Latte, I looked around. All was pretty quiet. I could hear some birds chirping in the distance and the sound of a nearby waterfall. There were several ducks, geese and swans taking a leisurely Sunday morning swim. They all seemed to be segregated in various areas of the lake according to their species. I find it interesting that animals have their own "cliques" just as people do. I smiled thinking of these birds having territorial areas as though they were all in different "gangs." I suppose in a way they were.
I noticed the
